@kittyloo wrote:so my step-daughter was over last weekend. both her and her brother are very intelligent. ages 15 and almost 18. so when she mentioned that neither one of them can write cursive, and older brother can't read it at all, i was floored. I mean really floored. what???? I realize that it;s mostly not taught in schools anymore, but i had a really hard time wrapping my head around this. Is this unnecessary anymore? you don't have to sign your name? print it, or make a X? is this really the norm? Granted they go to a very "liberal, school" in a college town. (not sure if this makes a difference or not) maybe i'm just out of touch. not sure. they have 3 bathrooms, if that tell's you anything. just minor venting.
@kittyloo Just have to ask about the older brother not reading....how did he make it this far in school?

@panda1234 maybe my post wasn't clear on this point. he can read fine, just not cursive writing. print only.. sigh

I blame the parents for this! This is not only ridiculous, but wrong! Our taxes are going towards teachers teaching our children! So glad mine are grown....

No, but paper checks are nearly a thing of the past, and you don't have to use a signature when you electronically pay.

I have hope that some kids have enough curiousity and drive to teach themselves to write in cursive.

I understand your frustration. My kids never got penmanship grades either, not even for their printing. I am grateful my kids had a retired teacher as a tutor that was appalled at their cursive and asked me if she could work with them on improving it. I remember having to switch to using pens only in middle school, except for math courses, and everything had to be written in cursive after fourth grade. We had two grades on each paper, one for our course work, one for penmanship, through sixth grade, and received a grade on our report card as well. None of that happened with my kids. Such a shame. Spelling no longer carries the same weight because of "spell check", and dictionary work is a thing of the past because of Google. My sister actually makes her kids use a dictionary for practice, but they don't have them in their classrooms. At least my kids can read cursive, and can write (very poorly) in cursive. I guess all you can do is make sure that they have a good solid legal signature. Unfortunately, that will probably go the way of the thumbprint.

I can't write in cursive. One reason is that I am left handed. It was difficult for me to master it. Being left handed affected the slant, etc. It ended up not being legible. Almost immediately I switched to print. It takes a bit longer. But at least it was legible. And that is the whole point in communicating on paper. My husband on the other hand always writes in cursive. You should see our joint names written out by us. His big beautiful cursive and my little neat print.

I learned cursive yet I have a hard time reading most other's cursive writing - recipes, directions...
we had a penmanship teacher who made us practice endless connected E's an O's. She was very old school. If she had been allowed a hickory stick she would have used it on me as I never was able to make perfectly beautiful letters in cursive.
I saw an old man one day signing a screen at the cashier's station and he was writing his name soooo slowly...funny because i just scribble at these stations. you could mark an X and its the same thing.
