I asked my sister, who is a dentist, about using baking soda. While it was once used widely and is added to some tooth pastes, she said it is far too abrasive to use on a regular basis. In other words, over time you will wear down your enamel.

If you are interested in whitening your teeth, I highly recommend Crest White Strips. I have had Zoom whitening (done professionally by a dentist) and I maintain them with the Crest White Strips. They are amazing!

vamp, many thanx! when focksie mentioned that it left her teeth rough, I decided not to do it. you just confirmed it. I've tried crest whitening strips and it oddly left half of my teeth transparent looking! it was too weird that I never did it again! you're so lucky to have a sister who's a dentist!

Re: brushing with baking soda

I just did it last night. If you go straight baking soda, it can be mildly irritating, depending on how sensitive your gums, tongue and lips are (remember, it will make you drool a lot).

I recommend starting with your regular toothpaste then lightly touch the toothbrush on your baking soda. Having toothpaste on the toothbrush will help hold the baking soda on the brush. Rinse and repeat (paste/baking soda on the brush).

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

Re: brushing with baking soda

PS - don't do it every day. Maybe twice a week.

Re: brushing with baking soda

I like the suggestion here to use a bit of baking soda on top of the toothpaste (on the toothbrush).

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).

Re: brushing with baking soda

that is what my dad used.

he was raised on this style of brushing, his whole family continued using this brushing till they all passed away.

I have tried it, a couple times when I have one of those awful tastes in my mouth, it helps kill the taste, I didn't have much after taste.

I do use Arm Hammer baking soda toothpaste quite a bit, I go back and forth between the baking soda paste and reg. cologate toothpaste.

I would be luckier if she didn't live 2000 miles away! {#emotions_dlg.crying}

ETA: That is weird what the white strips did to your teeth. Never heard that one before.
