Re: birds on porch problem solved - with this!

I would prefer using my radio again. Birds want their nest in a quiet place, and adding noise or activity to the area they have chosen will help them change their minds as to the location. The snake idea does work, but you have to move the snake often to make the bird think it is alive. If the snake just stays in one position all the time, the bird realizes it is fake and has no fear of it.

http://www.urbanwildlifesociety.org/UWS/BrdCtrl/AZRpbStickyBrds.html

"Kimmick said the product his company uses is "For the Birds" and is designed to repel birds from popular nesting spots by sticking to their feet making the area uncomfortable for them.

However, Ellen Von Long, a bird rescue volunteer, who has state wildlife permits to nurse rescued birds in her Phoenix home, said the sticky substance kills more birds than it repels.

She said the substance is so sticky that it can't be removed with non-toxic substances and stays on the birds' feet and feathers for about six months or until the bird molts and grows new feathers."

The above story appears to be about a slightly different product, but sticky is sticky. Once you get anything on bird feathers that isn't meant to be there, it's a likely death sentence for the bird.

Tam have you tried that thin garden netting stuff, that looks kind handy, just drape it over the stake. Smile

I must have well trained birds lol. Oh and 4 cats! A beautiful pair of Blue Jays have nested in a cedar tree at the end of the drive, they are very smart, they know the cats wont go down there.

Have a nice day...

Shesallthat, I missed the original thread I guess but have you tried the aluminum strips hanging down? I know it sounds like a pita to get them all up there and maybe even have to moved them if the birds move but something like that?

I havent read the reviews at Amazon but this stuff sounds really cruel... {#emotions_dlg.sad}

eta~ I dont think they need to come back more than once to catch the drift, once will probably do them in anyway. Probably be more humane to plink them.

"do them in"!!! such drama. {#emotions_dlg.unsure}

i put this up last week - once - and not one bird has been STUCK to the ceiling of my porch. {#emotions_dlg.rolleyes} of the half dozen that i was having i am sure at least one that would have been. or dropped dead if it was as awful as some of you are trying to make it to be! and with the rain we have had which is when they would take cover under my porch they have not even attempted to come back.

You can't know what happened after they left, you can't know if after they attempted to clean their feet, they died. You don't care as long as you don't have a little mess.

There are other ways to keep birds off of property. Bird wire is humane and works for countless businesses.

That right there is reason not to use it!

It has a warning to keep out of the reach of children so it's probably harmful to birds. I'd rather put up with the little mess and have birds than take a chance on harming them.

good grief!!!

it does not harm them at all - it is just sooo sticky and messy that they do not want to be bothered with the area anymore.

Birds can not wash it off. They are very delicate ...such goo would be a slow death....

Thanks, I HAVE seen the netting, and this is the year I will likely try it- I don't mind "feeding" the birds a little bit, but I like some tomatoes for ME too! LOL! I tried tinfoil last year, along with the snakes, but it is hard to keep the tinfoil "attached"...
