If you picture Texas from cowboy movies then travel to far west texas...it is like being in a movie western but even there didn't see one snake we did see a coyote and javelinas

Personally north and East Texas are my least favorite parts of the state. North Texas being #1 flat as a pancake and traffic congestion, that metroplex....East Texas---the humidity, the people aren't as friendly....Houston is layed out weird...Houston and Dallas are NOT favorite cities of mine...

In Texas there's always something going on ---fiestas, concerts, festivals etc etc . ...people like to travel around and the state it is big..its not a bit of bragging it is what is.... If you travel out of state by car it takes about a whole day to get out of Texas....

The Texas Hill country Fredericksburg area is my favorite if you don't want to live in a big city....

@Kachina624 hates Texas...lol....just like you couldnt pay me to live in California--beautiful state but the cost of living, wild fires, smog, earthquakes, electrical blackouts, and a host of other things is a turn off to me...to each their own...

@Spurt- I believe Kachina624 resides in New Mexico not California.

@qbetzforreal

I know that ---what Im saying is Katrina doesnt like Texas, just like I dont like California....

@Spurt- okay.  I reside in So. Cal.  Backing out of the conversation.  Carry-on

oops meant Kachina...corrected original post..

Everyone is entitled to have their own special personal preferences no problem with that......  despite our differences Kachina and i get along really well... 😊

Enjoyed your very detailed post, and wanted to answer your comment about the water in Florida.  Cocoa Beach is on the Atlantic Coast - it's the Gulf Coast Florida beaches that are known for 'sugar sand" and clear blue waters, particularly the Fla. panhandle.

I'm no expert on Florida, but we NOLA folks spend a lot of time on the beaches of the Fla. panhandle.  Think Destin and Santa Rosa Island.  The sand and water are similar to the Caribbean. Beautiful.

Just get through 4 months of summer with your A/C (June through September are the worst months---east Texas longer summer weather)...but its no different than those that hunker down up north for winter for all those months......

This is what I think every time someone goes on about the heat.  How is that different from the extremely cold winter weather that many experience for months on end.  Hot weather doesn't keep you housebound, nor does it need to be shoveled.  Everything is air conditioned.  It's just a matter of your individual preference.  Personally, I can't stand cold weather, but that's me.

Oh, boy, @Spurt ,  that description of charming Burnet, Texas, meshes very much with what my mother saw and felt about it!   I've not been to that particular part of the wonderful state, but would very much love to see it--   someday, I hope!

Oh good grief!  I can't believe the negative comments I'm reading here about TX.  I am a native Texan, and would never consider moving from this great state.  My only advice is to stay clear of the west part.  Way too congested.  I live in the upper east part, and love it!  I've lived in large towns and small, and would never leave this small town environment.  We Texans are strong and proud.  Don't mess with Texas!!!

@MomCat.  Maybe you ought to get out and see other places, especially if you think West Texas is congested.  As far as I'm concerned, although flatter than a pancake, it's the best of the state.

Lest anyone is confused: Oregon only decriminalized possession, making it a civil crime rather than a criminal crime. The drugs themselves and the selling of them are still against the law.

I'm not supportive of it.  Now you will pay a small fine for an arrest for heroin, meth or cocaine.  I just think it was a bad move.

@Spurt.  Would you believe my maternal great grandfather was a Texas Ranger back in the early days?  I also have a defender of the Alamo among my ancestors.  On dads side, my great grand father cowboyed in West Texas, married and eventually ranched in SW Kansas.  He was murdered in a land dispute with a neighbor about 1915.

I have roots there.  I just don't like most of it.

I wouldn't move to Texas at this point. Maybe in 5 or 10 years. And even then I'd only be interested in Austin.

@Porcelain That being said, I doubt very much if you'd be happy in Texas.
