In a certain City or State, it is no longer called "Columbus Day". It has been changed to "Indigenous People's Day".

And here in the capital city of my state a Junior High School is no longer calling children "Girls/Boys". The new term is Purple Penguin, figure that one out for me will ya?

What's next?

Yes, I have every day off as far as being employed.

That's simply not true. You need to get the facts.

You are the one who needs to "get the facts" since I can name three cities (most recently Portland OR, and Seattle WA and Berkeley CA) who've renamed Columbus Day to Indigenous People's Day, and I can name four states (NV, HI, OR, and CA) in which it's no longer a public holiday.

As far as the "Purple Penguins," that was in reference to a school district distributing handouts, provided by a loopy organization, to teachers. The fact that a school would even entertain this nonsense and give it credence by doing that should tell you everything you need to know.

Re: anyone have Columbus Day off?

I don't work anymore but my husband isn't off. (Of course he would work anyway if he did have off..lol. He volunteers some holidays because he likes the overtime). Anyway, I thought only schools, and government offices are closed?

I will (happily!) have my 3 granddaughters tomorrow all day until after dinner when SIL picks them up. Cant wait! :-)

Re: anyone have Columbus Day off?

I remember it being really big when we lived in New York: I didn't have the day off, but a lot of schools-particularly the Catholic schools were..... then everything changed and it became a controversial holiday for a number of reasons. I wonder if it has outlived its usefulness.... Poodlepet

Where do you get the facts? I've seen it reported from the city in our state/the local news/the local newspaper and the national news. I don't have any children so I have no reason to look further into this, and I do not live in Lincoln, Nebraska.

Give me the "facts" as you know them and please give me the source especially if I can contact them myself for my own assurance.

Re: anyone have Columbus Day off?

I do not ever remember not having school on Columbus Day. Some surrounding districts now have in-service days I guess because parents took their children out of school.

My husband's office is open but he gives his employees 2 comp days in exchange for working.

It was one suggestion made in a teacher training session seminar but is not school policy. For some reason (sensationalism would be my guess) media outlets latched on to purple penguins.

It's always a victory for me when I remember why I entered a room.

Nope ... we had to trade this day for another day in January. We'll be working.

Re: anyone have Columbus Day off?

When I was teaching, we were not off on Columbus Day. Now that I am retired, I'll be going to the parade in NYC.

My husband is working.

Re: anyone have Columbus Day off?

When I was working, I seldom got Columbus Day off. Now that I'm retired, every day's a holiday. Well, except for this Columbus Day. I volunteer and tomorrow is my day on.
