Watching the TSV grill presentation got me thinking more about outdoor grilling, and I'm wondering what your thoughts are on this. Growing up (probably like a lot of you) we grilled outside using charcoal. Then the propane grills came out, and they use the briquettes(sp). For some years now I've noticed a lot of the grills don't use any briquettes. A few years ago my husband came home with a huge grill that doesn't use any kind of briquettes. It is WAY bigger than anything we need by a long shot, but he was so proud of his purchase, and he got such a great deal on it (clearance) that I didn't say anything negative to him.

The biggest problem I have with it is there is no "grilled" taste to the food! I don't eat meat, but I do like to grill veggies when I make burgers, etc. for DH and DS, and I really like a "charcoal" taste to my veggies! I bought a little cast iron smoker to put in the grill, but to be honest, I think it's a bit of a pain to use. You have to soak your wood chips first, and I don't think the smoker gives off enough smoke to really flavor the food.

So, I guess what my question is is does anyone else have trouble understanding outdoor grilling these days like I do? I thought the idea was to have a smokey, charcoal type of taste to your food. It seems that the new grills, which seem to be very popular, do nothing more than give you a place to or a means of grilling outside.

For what little bit of grilling we do I would probably be just as happy using one of those cheap table top grills that use charcoal, but I don't want to hurt my husbands feelings. I just don't get grilling without flavor.
