It looks more like a pre-school or kindergarten classroom.

I have no problem with it.

I can see both sides of it. On one hand some students are able to work/concentrate better when they are most comfortable. On the other hand, there's nothing wrong with being expected to sit properly in a seat while doing your assigned task.
Perhaps there can be part of the day when the alternative seating is used.

One of the 5th grade teachers at our elementary school took out the chairs and replaced them with yoga balls. She said it was to keep them awake, if you fall asleep on a ball you fall on the floor. (um, what?<me).
The kids sure liked bouncing on them. I don't really know if they saw an academic improvement or not. I can see that it may be helpful for kids diagnosed with ADHD. It could serve as an outlet for the excess nervous energy some of the kids have.
Many of the other classrooms have alternative seating as well as the desks, bean bags and such. The kids seem to like it. They use their desks for tests and other written assignments.
They have started letting the kids eat healthy snacks whenever they want to. They also changed the cafeteria menu, increased the portions, and quit serving the required 'healthy' items that kids just don't eat. No more chick peas every day.
This is a small rural school with an average classroom size of 18 pupils.
The kids like the changes. I guess I do too, now that I'm used to it.

That was me, at first. LOL

I think it's a terrible idea. I can't see it working on a long-term basis.

I'd curl up in a bean bag and sleep. They need back support in chairs. Geez, why do things need to change?

I followed the image to it's original website --- it's a second grade classroom.

My back hurts just looking at it! lol But I don't think it matters where kids sit as long as they are learning.

Nothing new about that. My girls are in their 30's and their teachers always set up their classrooms any way they wanted. Both my sons in law are teachers and one told us that when the weather gets nice, he teaches his classes outside as much as possible. He said the sun is good for them and it keeps them focused. They aren't daydreaming about being outside, they are outside.
