Appears to me, Georga needs to change their banking privacy laws.
I live in New Jersey. Every year I am mailed a letter from my bank asking permission to release my banking info to 3rd parties which includes vendors. I always check off NO, sign & dated. I make a copy to keep in my records.

If the entire story is read, it's clear that the problem is not unique to Georgia.
The Federal Trade Commission has not been thoroughly enforcing the federal law that prohibits the problem, which has been going on for years and actually has resulted in some significant court cases around the country.
Private investigators who search for and sell bank account information to lawyers have been prosecuted, but the government has stopped short of prosecuting the lawyers who asked the PI's to get the info and then used it.
Our tax dollars at work, and not working very well for consumers, apparently.

dental & doctor offices give SSNs to "off shore" third party contractors so they can call the insurance companies to
check on claim and benefits
how does anyone know they are HIPAA compliant?
huge HIPAA breach in my opinion
I've taken calls for 20+ years it really ticks me off

You do not have to give your ss number to medical offices. They usually use the number for filing. Maybe it's different when on Medicare or Medicaid.

@esmerelda wrote:@missy1If that's the case, what's the point of having a checking account?
That's why some people don't have bank accounts. They don't pay their bills so they have no account to garnish. They cash paychecks at Walmart or some other check cashing place.
