@AnikaBrodie Go for it! I am involved with an orphanage in Haiti..founded by a native Floridian who happened to be in the country when the eartquake occurred...he rescued many children...he has to come back to the states every few months...This time he was given a Jack Russell Terrier...his name is tick tack..he is helping the boys to heal...remember 250,000 people were killed in that earthquake..more recently a hurricane took out several hundred more lives. Wish I knew how to post pictures.

Thanks @sfnative..and you are so right...The drug they are currently using is called panhematin...used in most cases with albumin... Panhematin was the first orphan drug..the American Porphyria Foundation provides tremendous support..it is a difficult disease to keep in check..you just never know when it will rare is ugly head..so many interesting people: doctors, lawyers, teachers, moms, dad , children dealing with this disease..Dealing with the FDA is not an easy road..research is costly and there are not too many with the disease. There are sites around the country who offer services...none here in Florida.. The University of Miami has one doctor familiar with the disease...she is the newest member of the team..The best doctors seem to be:University of Alabama-Birmingham, THe University of Texas at Galveston. Mount Sinai in NYC..does genetic studies..looking at the DNA,etc. San Francisco also performs a great service..We are truly blessed to have a group of 12 or so doctors who have dedicated their lives to this disease and will treat us for free.

@gracie2014

It does seem sometimes as if the earth has something against Haiti.  The weather calamities on that poor country are mind boggling.

I knew of a woman who was a stewardess (flight attendant nowadays).  One of her flights was to Haiti just after the earthquake and she couldn't get herself to leave.  She called it "My Haiti" and stayed there for years.  She had three sons and a husband at home, but she became obssessed with Haiti.  I think I heard she came back before she died, her family fully grown with grandchildren.  But nobody really knew her.  I did not know her personally, but through a friend knew her story.  (Come to think of it, that would probably make a great novel.)

I struggle with the morality of something like this though.

@LilacTree I agree totally...The guy who got this whole ball rolling is one of my best friends..such an incredible man of God..anyway he was just placed in hospice..it breaks my heart..He has folks in place to carry on this great work..the young guy...about 42 founded the orphanage..my job is to act as a drop off point for :diapers, clothing, peanut butter, toys, books, diaper wipes, hygienic products...soap, toothpaste, deodorant and the list goes on.. When he returns from Haiti in June I will probably visit schools and places of worship..People don't realize that 250,000 people is the size of Orlando..the same number of lives lost in the earthquake.

Interesting question.  I've often thought of writing a children's book on working with certified therapy dogs.  We had two dogs (at the Bridge) who were certified therapy dogs and worked with people of all ages (ages 5 to 105) and in all venues from day care centers and schools to assisted living and nursing homes plus everything in between.  DH and I, and the dogs who loved doing therapy, shared many rewards for doing pet therapy as a ministry for nearly 12 years.  It's difficult to put into mere words just what Anika and Brodie meant to the people we visited every week.  Suffice it to say they brought a lot of smiles and a few tears to the people they served.

The title of my book would be "The Gifts and Blessings of Certified Therapy Dogs."

@AnikaBrodie

Absolutely!  Go for it.

As the Mom of 3 Therapy Dogs I know exactly how difficult it is to put into words.

* We frequently visited a former university professor, who in the late stages of Alzheimer's had lost his ability to speak in language any of his care takers understood.  However, one of my 'loves' would sit beside this man with his head on his lap and this wonderful man and he would converse for at least an hour.  I do not know what they said, but I DO know there was communication taking place.

*  Several times I've received calls from the families of people who know my 'loves', they ask for me to bring one to come be with their family member who is dying, and has asked to have a doggy with them.  To see them reach out a hand as the dog climbs up in the bed, and to see them with their arm wrapped around the dog is something that can not be forgotten, or put into words.

Bless you for what you do.

Re: You're Writing a Book. What is its title? Give a little background.

The novel I'm writing now is titled "The Ten Thousand." It takes place in the not too distant future when the world has become a single global community with a small group of leaders who control everything. The leadership inadvertently killed off 99.9% of the world's human population a few decades earlier through a gene insertion program designed to minimze deaths from cancer, heart disease, etc. that had unintended consequences, but the population is now rebounding.  The government leadership now exercises strict contorl over the media however and has created a book committee whose job it is to approve all written works. (The ten thousand in the title refers to the number of books the committee feels anyone is capable of reading in their lifetime.) Books must promote the official government stance and reinforce their policies to make it onto the list of ten thousand. All other books are banned.

The story follows a young writer whose talent is discovered in elementary school who's then sent off to a special government supported school for writers where he's trained and indoctrinated in how to write in a manner that is aceptable to the government. His first book that's submitted to the book committee just squeeks onto the list of ten thousand and he becomes something of a celebrity as a result. This lands him a scholarship at a university, that's once again supported by the government to further his educaiton as a writer. There he discovers that there's a vast underground (literally in this case) library that houses many of the now banned books along with lots of old newspapers, magazines, and other published works.

It's there that he learns that the government had been warned of, and knew of the risks of the genetic manipulation program they undertook that killed most of the people. It's there, from reading some of the banned works that he starts to udnerstand how much the government is trying to hide things from the people and how much control they assert over the people.

He then teams up with a band of rebels, largely escapees from the government re-education centers, and vows to expose the truth. His next entry before the book committee is eagerly awaited but at the ceremony to formally hand over his book, he hands over a book, just not what the committee expects. He hands over a book exposing the crimes of the government and their steps to cover it up.

Not surprisingly the government doesn't take this especially well and dismisses his book as a work of satire, but copies of the book get distributed from a rebel held printing press and dissent starts to spread. The government tries to clamp down on the dissent only to have that clamp down increase the level of discontent.

The head of the book committee, previously undyingly loyal to the government leadership, senses an opportunity to seize power and ends up supporting the book and formally awarding it a spot among the ten thousand. He announces that the information in the book is in fact accurate and helps to bring about the downfall of the government. He then tries to assume the reins of power for himself, only to be in conflict with the rebels who wish to break free from a global leadership entirely and go back to local leaders making decisions instead of self-appointed aristocrats.

And that's about where things stand to this point.

Due to having had a rather unusual position, a niche one at that, I've thought of writing a book.  It would be titled something like:

The Making of a Surgeon: Working with the Dead

The position of which I speak was located in a large medical school/hospital/clinic complex and oversaw twelve surgical specialty departments' specific type of educcation, plus trauma training, using donated tissue.

What would you write about?

**********  Your post interested me because I have been contemplating donating my body to science.  Maybe you could title it something like What Your Death Can Mean To Others  or maybe,  The Last Gift You Ever Give     I think your idea of a book like this is great.  I would read it.

Re: You're Writing a Book. What is its title? Give a little background.

I started one in the mid 1990s .... a family history.   I'm tracing each of my four grandparents' lines back as far as I can - sort of a combo biography / timeline setup - showing what was going on in their airea of the world at the time they lived there, and including personal histories.

One line is traced back to 1550.  Still working on the other three.

I knew someone once who was going to write a family history and title it:  If I Had Half a Brain...My Family would Fight Over It."  LOL!
