Re: You don't think it will happen

I am waiting for a new card from visa. I can't find my purse with everthing in the house. I got in with the key so I can't believe I can't see where it is.

@sidsmom Actually, your debit card is just as safe. As much as we seem to hate regulations, there is a regulation (Reg E) which covers electronic transactions such as ACH, debit card, etc. Banks are completely responsible for any fraudulent charges made on one's account through debit card comprimise or theft.

The banks have upgraded their fraud detections systems precisely because THEY are responsible for refunding every dollar, provided the customer reports the erroneous charges within a certain period of time (it may be 30 or 60 days, I don't remember).

My debit and credit card have been comprimised probably half a dozen times over the last 5 years. I have never paid a cent on either and usually the bank informs me before I even know it happened.

It's a pain because I have Amazon Prime, my Sirius XM and few monthly payments attached to my debit card and I have to inform those companies of my new card #.

More of pain though if I had to worry about taking a hit for fraudulent charges.

At least not to you!  I got a call yesterday from my bank regarding "suspicious activity" on my debit card.  My husband has one also, but it was on my number.

There was a $1.00 charge made at a gas station in a different state.  I have had charges like that on my credit cards.  A vendor does it to check out the validity of the number you give before accepting the purchase.  They take the $1.00 charge away once you have been verified.  But I have not had it happen on a debit card.

I did not know they had already shut the card down.  My daughter did some shopping for me and had the darn card declined at checkout!  We had to go to the bank in order to get me another card, so what a pain.  All the other charges seemed legitimate.

Makes you wonder how your number was obtained and tried in another state.  My daughter has had my card and she is very careful with cards.  I have read some people get them when you use it to fill up your tank at a gas station.  They walk around with a card reader while you have it out.  She had used it a couple of times at a gas station this week.  So I guess those anti-reader devices make sense.

These banks are not taking any chances with these frauds!

@hyacinth003     last year we had our Debit card compromised as well.  We now only use one designated credit card for ALL OF OUR PURCHASES that we use to use  our debit card  for .

It is safer to use the banks money and not our own money with the debit card and no risk of someone hacking into out checking account.  We also now benefit from getting reward points using the credit card( that we just pay off in full each month)... over a  $100 a month practically that we earn using the credit card!  It is like using someone elses money to buy everything and get paid for doing it!

Re: You don't think it will happen

It's happened to me at least 3 times, it's annoying.

They always seem to cancel my card when I'm about to go out of town!

Happened to my DD too.    She lives a modest lifestyle, we both do, and she had several $1000 charges, that ended up over-drawing her account.    Why in the world were the charges even approved!    She didn't even get a phone call, she pulled up her balance & nearly passed out.   This was on a bank debit card.

I think at one time card fraud was an unusual occurrence, now, not so much

Re: You don't think it will happen

This has happened to me and my DH 3 times with our Debit cards.  Each time the bank credited the funds back to us.  This is all after the suppedly safer chip cards were introduced.

Thankfully I have seen first hand that fruad departments do work.

Irt happened to me. Just got a new atm card. They lifted my card off a gas pump. They tried to purchase things. Now, I use cash at the pump.

Re: You don't think it will happen

I put credit card information in my phone Contacts.

Discover is the card I have had the most trouble with. It has been compromised at least three times. Once I had to get a replacement for a new card before it ever got to me.

After having a large purchase amount declined, I now let the credit card company know beforehand if I will be spending more than I usually do.

Re: You don't think it will happen

It happened to me on a debit card, twice.  Once when I lived in NY and someone in MD charged $325.00 at Targets.  The other time I was at CVS and used my debit card to make a purchase and someone in Florida got $500.00 from an atm transaction!

Thank goodness both times the bank called to verify if I made these transactions.

They closed my card and I got the money back, but I try to use cash as much as I can.

Re: You don't think it will happen

I had my purse stolen when i was in my 20s. It was my favorite bag i had saved up for as well. My wallet, car keys everything. The thief went on a shopping spree within minutes of my wallet missing. Im so glad Nowadays they have all kinds of security checks. Just call your bank and they'll terminate the card and send you a new one.
