Re: You buy a gift for a friend...

Beware of designer "purse parties" - even though they may be organized by PTAs, churches or that attractive neighbor down the street. These bags are still counterfeit and the sellers subject to prosecution. One such lady, Virginia Topper, the wife of a New York lawyer, was busted with sixty thousand dollars cash in her underwear drawer and later sentenced to community service. Even Walmart and Costco have sold counterfeit bags and been held liable for willful blindness because they failed to confirm the origin of the goods they purchased.

In June of 2008, LVMH the owner of various luxury brands including Louis Vuitton won a judgment in France ordering eBayto pay three hundred and ninety two million euros in damages for failing to police its site. They were able to prove that ninety percent of all Louis Vuitton and Dior items sold on the site are counterfeit.

Many people think that purchasing fake handbags is fine. Breaking the law is justified with claims that sellers are just giving people what they want and besides the companies have plenty of money so they aren't really being hurt. Yet it is in fact a crime. Buyers who purchase these counterfeit bags are giving money to criminal organizations. Profits from the sale of these handbags can be traced to terrorist activity. Often the conditions under which workers produce these goods are inhumane.

I'd let it go and then next year just exchange cards.

Also, the "fake" Coach bag...I have a question. Was it truly fake or was it bought at an Outlet? The outlet stores have product that are produced by Coach but are not the same usually as what is in the Coach stores. (Some are the same but most are not).

So, if it was purchased at an Outlet it could have still very well cost the required 2 to 3 hundred $

She said she had proof she had it appraised...guess she was suspicious?

Preds I will even split for Mexican food.

I wonder though because of the fact that the outlets don't carry the same merchandise.

And don't get me started on those fake purse parties.

Never heard of those parties scottie?

Often they sell those knock-off purses at home parties. The people who mfg. and sell these purses are tied to organized crime and terrorists.

Oh goodness, what a generalization. I had a friend that hosted "fake purse" parties and she was neither in the mafia or a terrorist. It was just a fun excuse for a bunch of gals to get together, drink wine, chit chat and catch up, meet new friends, and accessorize our wardrobes without spending a fortune. I have a few fake Kate Spade and Fendi bags and I'm no terrorist either. Some of the knock-offs are very good reproductions. Unless you look at the label or examine the stitching very closely, it's hard to tell. I remember when I went with my aunt, cousin, and mom on a day cruise from San Diego down to Ensenada Mexico. We purchased some fake D&B bags and giggled like school girls over our stash.

You are wrong. It is the manufacturers and distributors who are "connected". Not the women at the party.

And it is against the law to manufacture knockoffs. And it is ethically wrong as well.

Flea markets etc. have been raided and I also read about a home that was raided and the poor woman hosting the party had no idea of the illegality.

You need to research this before you pooh pooh it.

edit for typo

What exactly am I wrong about? You mentioned those that SELL are tied to organized crime and/or terrorists and I pointed out that my friend is neither, and she sells them. I never said it was or wasn't against the law OR whether it is ethically wrong (that is subjective opinion). I don't need to research anything because I'm not the one hosting any purse parties, I just purchased some a long time ago. I also didn't pooh pooh anything, so no need to scold or get an attitude with me. I wasn't rude to you, just pointed out that my friend was not tied to any organized crime as you mentioned in your previous post.

I specifically said that those who manufacture and sell the purses are connected. I can't help it if you jumped to a conclusion and thus began your rant about your friend.

Yes, you specifically said those who manufacture and sell the purses, so I just relayed MY viewpoint based on my friend who SOLD the purses. She did not manufacture them. I didn't jump to any conclusions, I went by how you typed your comment. I read it as being one or the other, not necessarily both. If I misinterpreted it and you meant only people who manufacture AND sell them, then my bad. Either way, hardly a big issue and I can't help it if you saw it as a rant. I'm sure she unaware she was breaking any laws, since it was a company that sponsored the purse parties. The same way that I had no idea I was breaking any law by purchasing them. Now I know. There was no need for you to talk down to me about it. I didn't criticize your viewpoint and I don't understand why, when I express my viewpoint you call it a rant, when I only relayed information about my friend as I understood your post.

The limitations of online communication being what they are....it appears we have misunderstood each other. I did not intend to "talk down to you" and evidently you intended no "rant".

So, we can hopefully let it go between us now. :-)

Re: You buy a gift for a friend...

I would never say anything to anyone about spending more on them that they spend on me. Its rude!

PS I don't buy friends gifts anymore, and they don't buy me. We stopped that long ago as our families grew. But I can tell you we wouldn't buy 300 dollar handbags or any gift for 300 dollars for friends. We are middle class people, not rich.
