Re: Yes, Another Mask Thread. Open at Your Own Risk!

Yes, in my part of NYC (in Manhattan), it is hard to find people without masks.  I must admit I ony travel within say 10 blocks any direction from where I live because I do not drive and haven't had a need to go any farther.  Masks helped NYC drop its infection rate to 2%, and I don't think you can make it any lower.  Not even the large number of marchers raised our rates. They were outside.  I think the worst risk is inside, like a store, home (some households ave many people) or worplace.  NYC is reopening, but decided not ready for indoor dining, so dining tables have been set up in the streets.  People eating and drinking outdoors can take off their masks to eat and drink.  The tables have the required 6ft plus distance.  Indoors masks are always required.  It has not been an issue in NYC.

I live in NY. We've had this mandate for months. It must work because we went from worst in the world to one of the best. Most people are complying but you always see a few that aren't. We have a large population of Amish in our area. I see them in the local stores & i98% of the time they have no mask. But they don't have electric either so I wonder how aware they are of the situation. I'm sure they must keep informed somehow.

Your mask protects other people. So people should be considerate. Yes it's hot, yes it's uncomfortable but think of the others you come in contact with.

Re: Yes, Another Mask Thread. Open at Your Own Risk!

I'm on Long Island and we have had to wear a mask pretty much throughout this entire thing.

People wear masks in every store we go to.  No mask=No service.  I have witnessed people kindly being asked to leave if they were not wearing a mask.  One of my friends innocently forgot to put her mask on when she went into Starbucks.  She was doing a lot of errands and kept taking the mask on and off in the car.  She completely forgot (because it's really not second nature to be putting a mask on just yet) and the Starbuck's employee asked her if she had a mask.  She was completely mortified and went to go back into her car, but the employee actually had a supply of masks to give to customers who needed one and gave one to her.  It was an innocent mistake on her end, but ended well.

Although I see masks on people in stores, it's a different story out in the open.  Many people are having social gatherings without social distancing or mask wearing.

People here are pretty much not listening. They are not going to let anyone tell them what to do. They have freedom. If you don't like it stay home. People do not care about anyone but themselves.

Our governor refuses to do anything even though we are now one of the red hot states on the map.  The only example she sets is how to spread the virus.

About 25% of people here wear masks.  It's pretty sad that people have to be told to care about others.

See this is why some who question the use of masks might be more right that many want to admit.

Masks aren't a cure all to begin with (I know, no one here said they were). Then you add people not wearing them correctly, being too hot and feeling smothered by them, and constantly lowering to get air, unfog their glasses, scratch an itch, etc, and they may actually be doing more harm than the mask is doing any good.

The false sense of security reduces social distancing, the uncomfortableness of them and constantly needing to fuss with something that close to your face, just makes them POSSIBLY worse than being without one before it is all said and done.

We are not in one of Ohio's mandatory counties but my husband's employer decided on Monday this week, to institute a mandatory mask policy for all employees effective yesterday. Imagine that when they don't even do any sanitizing of surfaces anymore (that lasted about a week)

99% of the people (UPS hub) work in a warehouse type setting, with no air conditioning and no fans to move the air. It's a heat index of 100 degrees today, temps in the mid 90's and super humid. The trucks that many of the workers have to be in as they load and unload both semis and package cars can be well over 100 degrees on days like this. This is the 11th day in a row for this kind of weather. I can't imagine having have my face covered for 8 to 10 hours a day in those conditions. And I don't see it lasting. It's simply not sustainable to work at the pace they expect, in that kind of heat, and have your mouth and nose covered. I struggle in the store some times, if they don't have the air turned down low enough, can't imagine doing that all day in this heat.

I look for Ohio to mandate them state wide before too many more days. Right now it is by county and where there are the highest numbers, which I appreciate, not just treating every place the same, when the reality is the numbers are quite different.

There is no valid reason or argument against wearing masks - this is propaganda and promotes very risky (not to mention selfish) behavior.

One of my pendant lights over the kitchen island burned out during the shutdown when only essential stores were open. I set out to purchase a replacement and as I was pulling into the parking lot of the specialty store I realized I forgot my mask (totally inexcusable because I should have put it on before getting in the elevator at my condo).

I drove all the way home, parked in the garage, took the elevator up to my unit, grabbed my mask, elevated back down to the parking garage and drove back to the store.

This happened before our mandatory mask order was in effect, but it is just the way I roll.😄

ETA: Lesson learned. I now keep extra masks in my glove box.

It seems to me that those states that followed the advice of the doctors and scientists have done the best. I live in upstate NY, where the outbreak was nothing compared to downstate. Still, everyone is wearing masks. It's not rocket science to understand social distancing, hand washing, and wearing masks. Right now that's all we have. Those who ignore the advice do so at their peril

I'm in NYC too.  Masks plus social distancing have been proven to be effective in preventing the spread of the virus and no one can dispute this.

I live in a condo and we have explicit rules in my building (and I'm sure in all other elevator buildings in the city) to ride singly or in the same family in an elevator at a time with masks on at all times inside the buildings and outside our grounds.

I walk my dog before 7 a.m. and I haven't experienced an issue yet until this morning.  The elevator stopped on a floor and a woman about my age was ready to get on.  I asked her if she could please wait for another elevator (we have 3).  She threw up her hands and said I kid you not - "This is almost over!!"  (meaning the covid crisis).  I said no it is NOT almost over and your mask isn't even covering your nose.  She cursed at me but didn't get on the elevator.  I saw her come out of the building not 10 seconds after I did.  Was it too much to ask for everyone's safety?

My point in relating this besides venting Smiley Wink is yes there ARE plenty of ignorant people in this country.  Unfortunately MILLIONS of ignorant people. Even if my city and state are doing well we are one infected person away from creating a complete disaster.  And especially since we're surrounded by the majority of this seriously infected country it is far from being "almost over".

Just imagine if every person in this country followed guidelines for 2-4 weeks this COULD "almost be over".  But people remain ignorant and they deny science and they cry "not my personal freedom".  Very very sad.

Wear a mask. Social distance. Be part of the solution - not part of the problem.
