Part 1 of interview

In a

two punch, CBS's The Young and the Restless has revealed that Fake Cassie, the scam artist played by Camryn Grimes, is in evil cahoots with Ian Ward, the creepy self-help guru played by Ray Wise. There's more! Fake Cassie, it turns out, is also Mariah, the much-discussed but never-seen ex-paramour of Tyler Michaelson (Redaric Williams). TV Guide Magazine spoke with executive producer Jill Farren Phelps to get the backstage dish on the two hot reveals and to find out where Mariah and Ian go from here. Is anyone safe?

TV Guide Magazine: Let's start with the nefarious Ian. Was it always the plan to connect him with Fake Cassie/Mariah?

Phelps: Not at all. Ray Wise was only supposed to be with us for a short story arc - 10 days - but we quickly realized what a gold mine he is. In order to keep him, it became necessary to connect Ian with someone else on the show, beyond Nikki and Dylan. Ray has been a wonderful fresh face in Genoa City. The second he hit the screen it was, "Jackpot!" We knew this immediately, of course, but his episodes hadn't aired yet. By the time we knew the audience was crazy about Ray, too, we'd already completed our original agreement with him.

TV Guide Magazine: Is that why the writers put his character in jail?

Phelps: Yes. That was supposed to be Ian's swan song, but then we got word that Ray really wanted to stay. He's very happy here with us. So then we had to get him out of jail. Now we have a long-term plan in place. That's not to say he won't be in and out of Genoa City - Ray is a very busy actor - but we have great story coming up for him. June is going to be huge and very crazy. We'll keep Ian in town, initially, with the Mariah connection and the history of their relationship, but there's a much bigger picture to be revealed.

TV Guide Magazine: What's with the inference that Mariah strayed from "The Path"? Was she one of Ian's disciples?

Phelps: Possibly. Possibly a very important one.

TV Guide Magazine: Is she his child?

Phelps: Well...perhaps in some form. [Laughs] Is that vague enough for ya?

TV Guide Magazine: I'll take it! So what's Ian really want in Genoa City? Does he still have a thing for Nikki? Will he continue to s*rew with the Newmans even though everyone is on to him?

Phelps: That's his goal, though it's more than just s*rewing with them for the h*ll of it. He intends to infiltrate that whole rich-family connection. He likes the sudden power he has being Dylan's father and the instant relationship it gives him with the Newmans. He's an opportunist and he sees opportunity. Of course, if Nikki would take him, he'd be happy to be back in her life.

TV Guide Magazine: He's got balls going up against Victor like this!

Phelps: Oh, Victor will have his day in court with Ian. [Laughs] Let's see how I can rephrase that so it sounds like something you want to watch...

TV Guide Magazine: Hey, as long as Victor and Ian aren't exchanging recipes, we're good!

Phelps: They're not exchanging recipes! I promise! There's a great dynamic between Ian and Victor in that Ian is so smarmy Victor doesn't scare him - and that will make Victor even scarier. Ray and Eric are so terrific together. We just shot a scene with them where Victor is sitting at his desk and, as he so often does, he refuses to look at the other people in the scene. Ian had his face almost all the way down on the desk trying to make eye contact with Victor. It's a fabulous pissing contest and so delicious to watch.

TV Guide Magazine: It must be tough finding anyone who can go up against badass Braeden. Even in those scenes where Victor and Jack butt heads - no pun intended - it's never a real contest.

Phelps: That's why it's so interesting to have a foil who doesn't come from the "We must respect Victor" school. Ian is very playful and obnoxious with Victor, which gets under Victor's skin, which also makes Ian a highly respected adversary in Victor's eyes. It's more than a cat-and-mouse game. It's like a new love has come into Victor's life!

TV Guide Magazine: Let's talk about your other big reveal. At what point did you decide Fake Cassie would also turn out to be Mariah?

Phelps: Very early on. As soon as Tyler even mentioned there was a Mariah, the writers knew it would be Fake Cassie. She is going to be a huge threat to the Abby-Tyler relationship, which we know really needed some help. Mariah will also continue to have enormous involvement in the Sharon-Nick story and, obviously, her relationship with Ian is going to be big when it's finally discovered by other people. She's a wild girl, not a good girl like Cassie, and that will impact the whole Newman family.

TV Guide Magazine: So we shouldn't read too much into Mariah feeling sorry that she scammed Sharon?

Phelps: Nope. Any headway Mariah made there as a human being will vanish once her connection to Ian is out in the open. Neither will be redeemed anytime soon. It's so nice to have characters in Genoa City who are just plain bad.

TV Guide Magazine: What's Mariah's problem exactly?

Phelps: She's a have-not. That's a very powerful, driving force for her. Whereas Cassie had everything, Mariah had nothing, and the more she sees of the Newmans' life, the more she resents getting so little. Sure, we've seen that Mariah has a heart - she knows how much her Cassie face means to Sharon and is touched by that - but that's not the real her. There are no limits to what this woman will do to get what she doesn't have. Mariah is one very loose cannon.

Mariah and Tyler argue, Victoria takes a pregnancy test, and Victor is outraged at Nikki's leaving

At Jabot, Chloe makes her case for her and Billy making another baby. He tells her with Delia that mold was broken. She protests. She reminds him of how their lives changed after they had Delia. "We could get that back again." Billy tells her they can't have a baby together. "I love Victoria." Chloe doesn't want his love - just his sperm. Billy flips out a bit. She sobs that she can't go on without a baby. He suggests she talk to Kevin, but she says they're married in name only. Billy gently tells her if he has another baby it will be with Victoria.

At the ranch, Victor complains to his man that he was supposed to get his granddaughter's doppleganger out of town. He tells the man once Sharon's secret comes out he will be vindicated.

At home, Sharon and Nick discuss Victor's sick plan, and about Mariah. Sharon says she's so lost and alone. Nick reminds her she's not Cassie - she couldn't be less like her. Nick wants her to promise to stay away from the girl. Sharon changes the subject.

At the hotel, Mariah thinks Abby dumped Tyler, that's why he's checked in there. Tyler says she knows he's there with Abby. His phone rings - it's Abby, pacing their room in her lingerie wondering what's taking so long to get the ice. He reassures her and then turns back to Mariah. He complains about her cheating on him - Abby is everything she's not. Mariah counters that she knows all his secrets - does Abby? His look says no. He joins Abby, who says she got a call from Nick and has to go. After, Mariah walks into Tyler's room and baits him about Abby leaving him out of her family emergency. She warns him Abby's father is one bad dude and will turn on him. Tyler asks how she knows about Victor. Mariah accuses Tyler of liking the Newman money. He thinks she's jealous and tells her to stop talking. She kisses him. He reiterates that they're done. Mariah insists she loves him. He pleads with her to leave town and stay away from Abby. She leaves her bracelet on the floor for Abby to find and leaves.

At Crimson Lights, Noah tells Summer he got a parking ticket but he plans to get out of it. Summer gets a call from Victor summoning her to the ranch. Summer goes and Noah calls Courtney, who won't get rid of his ticket. Nick arrives, followed by Abby. Nick fills them in on Victor's Cassie lookalike plot. Abby leaves and Nick and Noah continue to discuss Mariah. Later, Chloe sits alone looking at photos of Delia.

At the Club, Nikki's accountant, Milton, asks her to run away with him. She's amused. Victoria appears, so he leaves. Nikki tells Vikki she's staying there. Vikki asks what her dad has done now. She says he crossed the line; she doesn't know if she can ever forgive him, and Nicholas won't. Nikki fills her in and they cluck over how despicable it is. Victoria thinks Nikki will forgive him - she always does. Nikki asks about Victoria's marriage. Vikki doesn't know what will happen.

At the ranch, Victor hangs up from Summer and tells his man that the only person who can help him figure out Sharon's secret is Summer's mother, but he can't ask her. Later, Summer arrives and they discuss Ian, before he asks about Phyllis. She says she'd give anything for her to wake up. Victor sighs, "So would I." Summer's surprised. Victor brings up Sharon. Summer says she's' been a good friend. Victor says she shouldn't lean on Sharon, and neither should Nick. He hints that she'll hear some things about him, but he was just protecting his family. Nikki arrives as Summer leaves. Nikki tells Victor she's there to pack a suitcase. He insists she'll find out what he did was justified. Nikki sniffs that he doesn't care who he hurts - she'll never understand how he can hurt his own children. Victor booms that they'll all realize he was right and then she'll forgive him. "The question is will I forgive you!"

At home, Victoria takes her pregnancy test upstairs. She comes back down and sees a missed call from Billy. She phones for a doctor's appointment to confirm a pregnancy.

At the hotel, Abby talks to Tyler about what Victor did to Sharon. They kiss with Mariah's bracelet nearby.

At Sharon's house, she, Nick and Noah celebrate with Faith over her first soccer goal. Noah tells Sharon he's sorry - he hates what Grandpa did to her. Sharon says she has her family and no one can take that away. Nick announces that he and Sharon are back together.

We're fine here! As my mom said, "The cows are still standing."(no one lives on a farm, by the way, it is her attempt to be silly).

I knew it! I pegged fake Cassie for Mariah! I didn't see the "Ian Ward" connection coming. This is another dumb storyline with characters who need to hitchhike right on out of GC.

Now for more important things...what is my "Stitchy Poo's" secret? I know he "killed" someone but that can mean more than one thing. Please don't let him be evil!

Sharon wants Victor's help, Abby comes face-to-face with Mariah, and Lily worries about Neil.

At the ranch, Victor leaves Nikki saying he's right about Sharon and she needs to come to her senses. Security knocks - Sharon insists on seeing Victor. She tells him they need to talk about her secret. Sharon wonders if he can put his hate aside long enough to help her uncover it. She explains her therapist confirmed there is a secret, but she forgot it in the treatment. Victor says it will shatter Nick. Sharon wants to figure it out, to protect Nick. Victor says he's in the dark as well, but he knows that Phyllis knows what she's hiding. Victor muses about her doing what's best for Nicholas - no matter the cost. He questions her getting involved with him knowing it will all fall apart. Victor asks her to do the right thing and get out of his life now.

In the hotel, Abby talks to Tyler about what her dad did to Sharon. She marvels that he would get someone who looks like Cassie to push her over the edge. Tyler has to get to work. Abby spots the bracelet on the floor. Tyler tells her Mariah was there and is staying across the hall. Abby complains about him not telling her sooner. She says she'll kick Mariah's skanky butt out of this town. Later, Abby sees Mariah in the hallway. Abby yells at her for being the Cassie lookalike Victor hired. Tyler appears and says that's Mariah. Abby informs him she's the person who her dad paid to torment Sharon. She goes to call the police. Tyler tells Mariah it was a horrible thing to do. She warns him to call off his guard dog. Tyler follows Abby and tries to convince her to drop it. Mariah listens and smiles.

At the Club, Lily and Cane chat with Neil about the twins meeting Colin. Neil and Devon both think about Hilary. Hilary appears. Cane says he told Hilary he would cut her some slack, but he would also back up his wife. Neil raises his glass. Devon goes over to Hilary and hints that he knows she has a boyfriend. She looks over at Neil and says maybe she does, maybe she doesn't. Meanwhile, Lily complains to Cane and Neil that Hilary's a fraud. Neil says he's seen a side to Hilary she hasn't. He talks about the rapport they developed on their business trip. Lily thinks she has them fooled. Cane joins Devon at the bar. Devon says he heard Hilary with someone in her room the other day. Neil assures Lily he's doing good and says goodbye to Devon and Cane on his way out. Lily tells Devon and Cane she's concerned about Neil - he's trying way too hard to be brave. Once alone, Cane tells Devon not to give up on Hilary, it may not be serious. Upstairs, Hilary lets Neil in and they undress and kiss while talking business. After s*x, Neil suggests they clue everyone in about their relationship. Hilary feels it's a bad idea. They kiss.

In Avery's apartment, she and Dylan discuss her fans and her recipes. Nick arrives. He says he's there because of what Victor's done - Nick thinks he's going to have to do something he never thought he'd do again. He recalls how he once turned his father in to the feds. Avery thinks it would be difficult to press charges. She suggests the worst punishment for Victor is his family turning away. Dylan asks how Nikki's doing and then leaves after telling Nick they both have lousy fathers. Nick admits to Avery he's having a hard time not liking Dylan. They talk about her cooking show. Nick says he's back with Sharon and thinks they have a shot. Avery says if he's happy, she's happy. She urges him to forget about Victor. They hug. Later, Avery receives roses.

Dylan arrives at the ranch and Victor grumbles that Nikki's out. He's forced to admit she doesn't know where it is. Dylan says since what Victor did forced her out, he's worried about Ian Ward getting to her. Victor tells him that won't happen and bristles at Dylan's questions. He urges Dylan to give Nikki a call. Dylan's phone rings - it's Avery thanking him for the flowers, but he says he didn't send them.

At Sharon's house she tells Nick them being together is a mistake. He tells her when the secret comes out, they'll be strong enough to deal with it. They kiss.
