A friend, who is also a Veterinarian, e-mailed me information on this sugar substitute that I would like to pass on. Most of us know this substance is deadly to dogs, three grams can kill a 65 lb. dog. Serious liver damage and failure can occur within 24 hours. It can raise insulin levels to dangerous levels. It is found in many sugar free human foods, i. e. gum, candy, etc. However, it has now been found that manufacturers of both prescription and OTC drugs are adding it. So, if anyone uses OTC to treat your dogs, or if your Vet prescribes a human medicine for your dog, please be sure you and your Vet research to find out if Xylitol is being used in the medicine. I have a diabetic dog, so this is very relevent for me. Please read your labels on anything you give to your dogs. And I am sure this warning must include cats!
