January 30, 2020

Statement from Island Express Helicopters

All services (regular and charter) were immediately suspended following the tragic accident on Sunday, January 26.

The shock of the accident affected all staff, and management decided that service would be suspended until such time as it was deemed appropriate for staff and customers.

Thinking out loud here.......suppose Kobe was in a big hurry to get to the sports academy and urged the pilot to fly?  Musing....

If the pilot chose to fly against his better judgment, that's on him.  It doesn't matter if Kobe or anyone else urged him or insisted.  A pilot is supposed to say, "No, it's not safe".  Period.

Unless Kobe held a gun to his head, it was the pilot's decision.  Flying because he felt pressured to do so is not an excuse and doesn't minimize his responsiblity.

It would be very, very difficult to prove what conversations may have gone on in that helicopter.  Truth is, if Kobe gave the pilot $1 million, it's still the pilot's duty to act responsibly.
