@texassunflower wrote:@maestra I taught for 30 years and was able to leave young when my mother had a stroke. Three weeks later she was told she had breast cancer. I have a pension and decent insurance. I wish after 5 or so years in the classroom that I had gone back to school for my Library Science degree. I also loved to read and enjoyed reading to children. At the end of my teaching career, I was ready to leave and was very fortunate that I could. The disciplinary problems and teaching to the standardized tests robbed me of my joy of teaching.
@texassunflower @maestra , I also taught and most of it I loved but of course there were times that were challenging. And I agree that teaching to the test squeezed some of the joy out of teaching and learning.
I started out making such a small salary I had to live at home until I got married. But over the years my salary steadily increased. Our health coverage was top notch, my paycheck was never late, (DH was self-employed so that guaranteed income was important) and we knew we had the steady accumulation of that pension.
I probably wouldn’t do anything different except maybe to remain in the Reading Specialist position longer.

i went to a yr nurse school (was similar to practical nurse==no boards)when i graduated. I married with 18 months of finding a job and never went back into nursing. I would never go back into nursing, hated that field. Was forced into this field by parents.
I always wanted to learn how to play instruments but my parents would not let me do this. I always wanted to become a secretary, again my parents said I could not take any courses in high school even to begin or see if like the secretarial business. I did take typing (had to fill a course my jr. year in high school). I like typing and am still fairly good at it.

Yes. I was lucky to be able to do the job I'd wanted to do since I was eight.

Med Tech ....wore a lab coat
Finance Specialist...traveled and wore pretty clothes

i loved the philosophy and learning material involved in all of those careers!

Worked out well ... I've retired with a fairly decent income and savings.
@ALRATIBA I have to tell you, with my mind, it went wild with guessing on that one!!!LOL

I would have done the exact same. I met my dh at work and we've been together now for 44 years! If I had changed anything back then, my life would have been completely different.

Same here, nursing was a good choice for me. I also love being retired after 40 years in the profession.

My career is considered more like a talent than a choice. There’s nothing I could have done to deny my destiny of Jewelry design, metalsmithing, painting and being a makeup artist. I have taught art when my children started school, but preferred “doing” rather than “teaching”. Through the years, I have been a substitute art teacher when given enough notice. Unfortunately, most art programs in schools are being deleted.
There is an Art Center nearby that offeres art classes in a summer camp setting for kids and I have volunteered there.
