However my neighbor who was working from home just got a notice from her enployer that she is now laid off.  In addition, they did something to change her severance so if she had gotten laid off last month she would have gotten a larger severnce package.

She's very worried.

@haddon9

That's horrible. They deliberately held off on letting her go so that they would have to pay out less severance pay.

@CrazyKittyLvr2

I understand your daughter's feelings...I went through the same thing many years back.  It was the thing that made me retire.

We were asked to stay at home for several months while our office was refurbished.  My commute each way was an hour + and some days 2 hours!  Traffic had become impossible to navigate around and I was on a commuter bus.  It was torture.

When I finally had to go back, I realized it was enough already and scheduled my retirement.  I had done this commute for almost 38 years and just couldn't do it anymore.

I doubt your daughter is old enough to retire -- I stayed 5 years past the time I was eligible -- but a long commute can wear you down more than the job.

I wish you both well!

I think that is wonderful! A smart move.

I live in Florida and only worked from home for two months. I have not felt safe going to work a single day since going back and the numbers here keep increasing. I don’t know why we were told to go back to the office (well, the governor is of the opinion all is well in Florida) when we can work as well and be safer at home.

All of the scientific experts state things are going to get a lot worse everywhere. Our country is not doing anything to help make things better. At this rate, I would be surprised if your DH doesn’t get another extension to continue working from home even after January.

Be sure to vote in November!

@RealtyGal2   Definitely!

@icezeus  It sure seems to be that way!  ...and she's been there for over 20 years!!

Re: Working from Home till January now

I have one sister that is an attorney in Virginia.  I have a sister in law that is an attorney mentor in Maryland. That means she coaches and teaches new lawyers.  Both work mostly at home Courts are still closed to the public.  But internal court matters are still open with staff. My sister in law (the one that's the mentor) just works at home.   She has to see new lawyers though in her office/law classes.  She can't pass or fail them, but she can recommend any that she finds ready for court. They come in scheduled one at a time. Bench trials (the ones without jury) will begin at the end of August.  I feel sorry for the new lawyers.  They have to be "groomed" before they can face a judge. Takes a while, and even then they can't question a witness or orally make a an argument.  You can't afford to mess up a case in court. Lawyers have to be articulate and comfortable in front of people. You can't be a lawyer if you hate public speaking!  It's extremely hard work.  Paralegals take the load off in creating documents, but it's still very tough. You have memorize countless laws, loopholes, etc.  You constantly have to be updated.  They get paid well (those that are in partnership) but they earn every penny. Probably one of the most difficult professions.
