I had to sign back in to thank you Feline Fine, I was being lazy! I see it comes in chew treats too, how about that. Smile

Hi Madame L, are you the former Ms/Miss Lorraine? If so, I've always enjoyed your stories about Boo Boo, as I have two Maine Coons myself. I'm so happy that he got a clean bill of health. Smile

Long story short: took him to the vet last week; she drew blood and did every test know to humanity. Got the results back today: HE'S FINE!!!! Kiss

One problem, though, is that his hips and/or back legs are giving him pain. I've noticed that walking up stairs really bothers him; I mentioned this to his vet and she said that if I want her to, she'd prescribe some pain medication for him. I'm going to do it; since he's in good overall health, why shouldn't we maximize his quality of life by getting rid of the pain?

We've also managed to get his weight down, too, to under 15 lbs. (he was close to 17 lbs. a couple of years ago) and I'm sure that's better for his legs and hips too.

The main reason we took him to the vet was that he had been upchucking at night--a lot. It turns out the cause was the kitty treat we'd been giving him. It's done wonders for his fur and skin but I had forgotten he's allergic to rice, which is the 3rd ingredient in his treats.

So, we discontinued the treats and no more midnight barfing.

And he's 10 years old now; I hope we have many more happy years together. Happy birthday, my sweet baby boy BooBoo! {#emotions_dlg.wub}

That's wonderful! I'm glad your cat is okay. Smile

Re: Wonderful news about my cat!

I wouldn't give prescription pain meds if I didn't have to. Why not try Cosequin instead? My 18 year old cat was on Cosequin and she could jump up onto things 5 feet high! And now I have my 14 year old Maine Coon on Cosequin as a preventive measure.

Another vote for Cosequin. Worked wonders for my arthritic cat.

My vet does not agree with giving cats a pain med just to make their quality of life more comfortable in their older age. He says it makes them more rambuctious because they feel better, until the pain med starts to wear off then they are in more pain because they played too hard. Makes sense.

He told me thats cats and cows have the highest pain tolerance of all animals, no kidding! I have a now 9 yr old male cat that has/had a broken elbow at 10 mo. old, it was unable to be set at the elbow joint so he has arthritis type symptoms too. I asked him about pain pills at one point not too long ago and he told me all the above.

Or what if it just knocks BooBoo out, not a good quality of life. Have you read into glucosamine/chondroiton for arthritis intervention for him? You might check that out before going the other route, see what you think, what his doc thinks.

I sure hope that if I come back in a next life, it's NOT as one of your animals...or one of your vet's patients.

Aw, that's so nice of you, SeaGal. Thanks for your thanks. 8-)

I didn't know that Glyco-Flex comes in treats as well, which is good if your pet won't ingest it any other way, or is not overweight. Thanks for the info. Smile
