IMO that is extraordinarily harsh considering nothing has been reported indicating the grandmother or any other family member was involved in the plot to murder the child or in any way mistreated the child.
Excerpt from: abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory/miami-mother-hire-hitman-kill-3-year-son-101528152
Detectives spoke with the boy's grandmother, who informed them that her daughter moved out in May. She said the boy still lived with her, and that his mother would FaceTime the child regularly.
The grandmother told detectives she took the photo of the boy, which was posted on the hitman website, on Monday and sent it to her daughter.
The child's mother was arrested later Tuesday at her father's house, where she had been staying. The arrest report states that she confessed, but the full statement was redacted when released to news organizations.
The woman told Miami-Dade County Judge Mindy Glazer that she has never been treated for any type of mental health condition. The judge set bond at $15,000 and the woman was released from jail on Thursday.
The judge told the woman not to contact her son, who is continuing to stay with his grandmother.

@Marp, I agree. From the OP, it sounded like the grandmother cooperated fully with the police.
One of my friends is currently caring for her newborn grandbaby because neither of the parents are parent material. The mother is in outpatient drug rehab. Not really sure how that works. But, just because the parents aren't able to take care of him doesn't mean the grandparents aren't taking good care of the child. They even approved through DHS to take care of him since he was born with some drug in his system.
I've known this lady for years and she has always had problems with that one child. You can't always control them contrary to many's belief who love to judge.

Hopefully, there is a plan in place to protect this child.
They know she attempted to have him killed and would continue to be a ongoing threat to his well being.
How does anyone know, for sure, she cannot get close enough to do harm?
It sounds to me Child Protetive Services should take custody, at least for the time being, to keep the child safe.

Wow, that's a terrible story. You have to wonder why. Obviously, it's completely incomprehensible why a mother would want her own 3 year old (or any age) child killed - but this child was staying with the grandmother, so ..... you know with other monster mothers they've considered having a child sort of a burden or ball and chain - but here this woman had full time care for her son. Anyway, it's so awful & hopefully the little one will never learn about this.

Her father is defending her.
On Thursday, NBC6 spoke with Paez's father, who said the case is not what it seems. He said Paez has medical complications and has had over 12 surgeries in her lifetime.
"My daughter is not a monster," the father said in Spanish. "My daughter is a little girl who was born with health problems.
She has liquid retained in her neck. She's had 12 surgeries, she lost the ability to move her face. She's been bullied in school, they called her 'the monster.'"
The father added that he's confident the justice system will bring out the truth.

Hmmm. I wonder where she came up with the $3000.00 to pay the hitman.

Becoming a mother at 15 would be really difficult. Not mature enough to drive but mature enough to be a parent? I think not
The grandmother may not have been happy to be left with the kid.
No mention of the boy's father

None of that is an excuse to kill someone (or have them killed).
