I would agree that Costco needs to rethink their return policy.
However, to say it is the fault of the store only accentuates the mentality of so many today. Blame the victim and not the wrongdoer.
Total lack of common sense and decency.
Just because something is legal doesn't make it right or morally upstanding.

I saw this story.....Horrible!
That abuse of the return policy could ruin future returns for all of us. Some people have no shame.

I kinda did the same thing some years back when i lived in WA. I joined Costco in 1983, so I've been a member a long time. I'd bought a set of old school fat snow chains at Costco for a car that I'd owned 1-2 cars previous & had never used them & they were still in the original box. I doubt Costco even sold that type of tire chains anymore. I was asking my neighbors if they wanted them for free, since most folks by then were using the thinner cable chains, if they used chains at all & I just wanted to get rid of them.
One of my neighbors worked at Costco & I asked him if he wanted them, since he was a car guy. He said "Take them back & get a refund" I told him I couldn't do that, because I no longer had the reciept. He said "It doesn't matter, just return them". .....ok
I went to Costco with the box & put it on the counter at the return desk & was preparing to have to justify returning them after all these years & the guy just looked in their system under my membership # & saw what I paid & when I bought them & gave me my money back, no questions asked.
I very seldom return anything, anywhere, even to this day. The very few things I've returned to Costco since then were defective or had spoiled. They're great about refunds. I've heard that Nordstrom tire story many times, living in WA.

we see q return abusers in the forum
q sends them a letter and they start a thread complaining
why they want to shop somewhere that they r so unhappy with so much they return most of it is strange
anyway......they defend the excessive returns because q states their return policy often in presentations claiming no risk.
however,.....this does not mean buy and buy and buy and then return and return and return. anyone thinking that is just looking for an excuse to abuse.
grown folks should have more common sense

It's a sofa. I seriously doubt anyone here will be shut out of shopping because the prices will be so high they can no longer afford to shop.🙄
Morality, disgusting, etc.etc.etc. Seriously.🤣

I remember watching a Hoarder Show one time. And the person lived up to the name of the show. The house was stuffed in every room. The piles of stuff were many feet high.
And the owner of the house kept saying she was going to return the stuff.
It had to take more than just a few months to stuff the house with all these purchases. Yet she thought she would return it all?
You see it on a smaller scale in the stores. Every time I walk into Costco there is a line out the door of people returning stuff. I saw a guy one time with a low cart and he had at least 15 cases of mayonaise.
Or walk into TJ Maxx there is always several people returning items.
I think people buy on impulse. And then get the credit card bill and decide they really didn't need it as much as they thought or they already wore the outfit and wanted to buy another new one.

People who do things like that are one of the reasons prices get so high...some people have no shame.

People are just ignorant. A previous co worker planned a Thanksgiving meal. Her guests cancelled. She returned the entire purchase a week later. Seriously? You returned produce, milk, coffee creamer, everything.Just crazy.
Another co worker used to buy designer handbags, use them several months and return them constantly. So wrong. She always bragged she got full refunds.
Probably why I barely ever do a return. I'm sure some retail workers have tons of disgusting stories.
if a beauty product doesn't work for me, I usually find a friend or family member that may try it.

Some people will always take advantage of others. But karma has a way of showing up at the right time.

This happens everywhere. My son works at a car dealership. A man came in having 7000 miles on a new truck he bought. He said the engine was ruined. They called the company and it was under warranty and everything was going through. UNTIL he called the company and started to rant and rave and after awhile he disclosed to them he put oil into it. Turns out it was the wrong oil!!! He just told on himself
