Re: Woman put in prison for 48 hours

There are a few articles about this out there. Yes, she was aware of the truancy rules. She didn't have the money to pay the fines and she pretty much ignored the steps she was supposed to take to become compliant.

The woman sounded like she might have been a little slow.

We don't know the ages of the children who are skipping school but if they are junior high age and the mother works it's not so easy for her to prevent.

I don't think jail is the answer, better the children be placed in a Juvenile Detention facility.

The school contacts the household within hours if the child is absent. After several unexcused ones, the household may be reported farther up the chain for an investigation.

I am sorry to hear this. While this might have happened anywhere, there is always a chance she may have been feeling ill and could have gotten medical help.

I not sure how I feel about jailing parents for truancy. It costs the tax payers money to do this and probably the parents just don't have the funds to pay the fines anyway. I agree with Scottie, CPS should have been brought in. But perhaps they were, I didn't see the story.

She didn't work. Sounds like she had a hard time- poor, no help at home, kids everywhere...someone said the kids "ruled the roost". The judge reluctantly sentenced her.

Re: Woman put in prison for 48 hours

How awful, that poor lady. She must not have had the money for the fines but jail seems extreme. I realize there is no cause of death yet, but I could see the poor woman being stressed to the point of a heart attack, particularly at that age (and I'm 59 myself), and with other children at home for her to worry about.

If she didn't have the money, she didn't have it.

If this was a teenager (and I know that's an assumption on my part and I am merely speculating without facts), she may have tried really hard to get him or her to go to school and failed. The child may have been the type to do whatever they wanted regardless of what mom said or did.

I say that because my mom did everything to get one of my brothers to go to school and he just would not go. She cried a lot over him. She wanted him in school. He finally got kicked out for the school year because of it. He eventually did straighten up and get his diploma, although he graduated a year late.

I know we always want to blame the parents first for everything but sometimes the parents are trying their best and still fail, especially with headstrong teens.

I really feel for this poor mom, the kids at home and yes, the one who caused the fines. I'm sure that kid never, ever meant for this to happen and will bear that guilt forever.

What a sad story.

Sounds to me like the kids should have been put in instead of the mother.

Fate whispers to her, "You cannot withstand the storm." She whispers back, "I am the storm."

Re: Woman put in prison for 48 hours

The handling of truancy in schools has been tightened up considerably in my county due to the nationwide problem of school shootings. I've been told authorities want a full accounting of who is present in school and who is not.........

Woman put in prison for 48 hours

Are you sure you mean "prison"? Now I've been in jail several times before I was 22 years old, but never prison and one trip was by the State Patrol.

Will keep an eye on my satellite news network and see if they got the story of this.

hckynut- you are right. Jail, not prison. Two different things. Thanks.
