I can see why some folks think the tip indicated $200; but I don't think it looked all that clear, and the fact that it wasn't totaled should have been a red flag.

That is "so long"? I guess he didn't notice it for a week. It was a credit card charge, wasn't it? Am I wrong about that?It was week before he notified IHOP about it, they gave him back his money but managment should not expect the waitress to pay it back. It's their fault.
When I worked as a server the restaurants are the ones who hand out the tips at the end of the shift that are put on credit cards. Of course it is the server who enters in the tips but they have to hand those copies into the manager when they get their nightly tip out. With a tip that big I am sure the server went to the manager first to alert them of this large tip because it would most likely be questioned and some POS systems even have a manager override key for a tip that large. So a manager would actually have to OK that tip amount being keyed in.
Usually with large tips like that though the customer almost always totals it out so you know it is not a mistake but if the restaurant let her take that tip out that night I feel it is their problem and not hers.

I agree. They just need to upgrade their policies.

Agree! My DS worked as a server/bus boy and he always came home w/ his tips that same night.
The customer in this instance did NOT total his receipt (instead he signed on the 'total' line instead of the signature line), and the restaurant totaled the cost of his meal and the tip. The IHOP needs to "own it", admit their mistake, rehire the waitress, and swallow the cost.

I was a server starting in the mid 80's through the 90's and I never worked at a place that shared tips. I am sure there are some but I haven't worked at one. I wouldn't want to either. I worked with some lazy people and I would have been p'd off if I had to share with them.
