Weird how the argument is between the employee & employer (IHOP owner)..shouldn't it between the CUSTOMER & IHOP owner? I don't ""hear"" the customer in any of this...or did I miss this?

It very obviously looks like a $200 tip. I was a server for years when I was starting out and I would have been so happy to get that but I wouldn't have actually thought it was a real $200 tip unless he totaled it by writing the tip amount and THEN the total with the price of the meal $225.76. It happens more than you think where someone makes a mistake and I have never seen a server take a huge tip like that unless they also totaled it. Then you know for sure that tip was meant.
I do think IHOP should have eaten this though.

$200 tip for a 26-buck tab?

The customer signed the receipt and agreed to pay the total amount, as it states at the bottom.

Ah. Good point.
Also a good reminder to write the total on your receipt. This helps to cut down on mistakes or dishonesty.

I thought the same thing. Maybe his wife threw a fit and he back peddled and said he didn't do it.

That sounds very reasonable to me.

I do agree with this. The restaurant is the one that gives the tips out at the end of a shift and they obviously ok'd this at the time so they should stand by it.
