Nice looking coats but here in Chicago when it's single digits and the wind chills are below zero a wrap coat won't do the trick. Need something that is closed from neck to knees at least and that will stay closed.  These coats may work in other climates but for me, not here.  Don't even like wrap bathrobes. They always open up on me.

I used to live in Buffalo, NY so I know all about the Great Lakes wind off the water and below zero temperatures.   Not a stranger to harsh winters!

I think it depends on how much time you spend outside.  I never had to walk very far to work after parking my car.  OTOH, if I was standing at bus stops waiting for the bus, a velcro or snap fastener coat might have been a better choice.

Re: Winter Coat Zippers

[ Edited ]

Take a little coconut oil and rub it along the teeth. Do this whenever you wash the garments.

As for the fabric getting stuck in the zipper...I had to take a couple of my coats to a tailor and they stitched down the fabric close to the zipper for the entire length of it and this kept the fabric away from the zipper.

What I've found is I have that issue with plastic zippers, which are used to keep costs down and weight down on lightweight coats. I never seem to have the problem with metal zippers. I bought a jacket on sale last winter online, without being able to try it on. It would not zip without close to 6-8 tries every time. I loved the jacket. I gave it to Goodwill because it was making me crazy. A current, more expensive winter jacket - again plastic zipper (that's all most of them use) - is also a PITA in that it takes me about 3 tries - can NEVER zip and go.

I hate plastic zips with a passion. I won't buy anything that has one for closure

Part of the problem can be the strip of fabric that they sometimes put as a gap filler so cold air doesn't get in where the zipper is.

Last summer I got a DKNY down coat for 35 dollars at Nordstrom Rack. It was great until I got stuck in it this winter because I couldn't unzip it. After I finally did I cut some fabric off the top of that strip, no problems since. It doesn't have a two way zipper, those can definitely be a nightmare.

The edges of the coat get caught in my coat zipper all the time.  I have to try and pull them out.

I just purchased a new down coat this winter. As I was trying it on in lord and Taylor the zipper got stuck. The sales woman who was clearly very experienced with selling coats showed me what to do. She said always pull the zipper away from your body when zipping or unzipping. She demonstrated and helped me with the coat. Using this technique, I have avoided any mishaps so far this year!!!👍😊

Okay, I have to ask the obvious  ......  WHY are you even purchasing coats with zippers?

You can purchase outer wear with buttons, hooks, toggles, snaps, velcro ... or, my personal favorite, wrap ties .... like you see on bathrobes.  They are also the fastest to put on or take off  (see below)

If you really INSIST  on buying this kind of annoying fastener, try putting paper towels on either side of the zippers and spray the entire length with WD-40.   Problem solved.

@Tinkrbl44 ... I'm buying the downfilled coats that come with metal zippers AND snaps because apparently it is a lot colder here than it is where you live. The coats you have pictured above would not even begin to keep me warm in our climate...even if they were wool with a liner. I doubt you get days where it is -25 below and never reaches above zero during the sunniest part of the day. I've never seen anyone wear a coat like those above around here. It's not a matter of fashion. It's a matter of keeping warm...even though those overstuffed down coats make us look like blimps.

@Moonchilde ... Our winter coats are all metal zippers. I don't think they would put a plastic zipper in a very heavy winter coat. Those darn plastic zippers always split down the middle and become unzipped.
