@SilleeMee wrote:I refuse to purchase low-deductible comp insurance. It's too expensive. Instead I take the money and sock it away in a 'just-in-case' account...a savings account for stuff like that or any other sudden mishaps or emergencies. I live in an area where there is baseball and golf ball size hail. That and terribly high winds with flying debris.
A brand new windshield installed on my car costs about $350. I wouldn't even file an insurance claim for that amount, even if they paid 100% for a new windshield. Filing a claim will cause my premiums to go up.
@SilleeMee I've never had a claim and my premiums go up twice a year. I don't even call anymore. I am going to call for quotes for different coverage though. AND the house.

@Meowingkitty...I'm in AZ too and my daughter has one hit that has grown and another small one that so far hasn't moved. I too had a windshield replaced by calling a company that comes to your house and does the work which my insurance paid 100%. I am quite worried about the one on my daughter's car but if she choose's to ignore it there is nothing I can do.

18 yrs ago, when I moved into my new house, I went to Costco and purchased a metal-framed patio chair with those wide straps on the seat and back area. I told one of the employees to put the chair in the trunk of my car - I had a Honda Accord. Instead of doing that, he put it in the front passenger seat of my car.
I drove into my garage and had trouble removing the chair - it was so tight. I managed to break my windshield. I called a guy who came to my house and I remember it costing around $263.
Decided not to purchase any more patio chairs - so my 1 lonely patio chair is all that I have in my backyard.

I would call my insurance company and get a recommendation of where to go for a new windshield. I think you want a quality windshield as that protects you in an accident.

Of course I have a Lexus so when the back window was cracked by a rock from a passing truck, they said they had to replace the entire back door and window.....$11k. Insurance paid $1200. I hate State Farm.
@lovesrecess Why didn't SF pay the full comprehensive claim or less your deductable? Your statement does not sound right. What am I missing?
I would have cancelled my SF coverage & gone w/another auto carrier if that had happened to me.

@SilleeMee wrote:When you pay for comprehensive insurance and have it pay for 100% of a windshield replacement then it isn't really no-cost. You pay for it when you buy your insurance and you still have to file a claim for the broken windshield which will eventually come back to you in higher premiums. Nothing comes without a cost.
That isn't true. I never filed anything myself, the glass replacement company took care of that. I just got the explanation of benefits in the mail. No deductible, no coinsurance and windshield damage isn't like an accident, it doesn't affect your premiums.
