That is so true.  Remember Sigmund Freud and the days of "psychoanalysis"?

Now, you're just given a pill and a "be well".

@151949... suicide is not committed  just by people who are mentally ill.

That having been said, I worked as a social worker in a hospital where people who had attempted suicide were admitted afterwards.  It was a humbling experience.  I worked there in the days when it was a crime to commit suicide so the person could be taken to jail.  S/he could also involuntarily be committed to a mental institution.

ITA!  I remember when the stock market crashed in 2008, many Hedge Fund Managers killed themselves.  One of the most heart-breaking stories was Thierry de La Villehuchet.  He grew up in a wealthy family and Bernie Madoff had ripped him off.  How could he tell his wealthy clients that their quarterly statements were a scam?

Another HF Mgr jumped off a building;  another stepped in front of a train.

I don't think these guys were "mentally ill".  Sometimes the devastation of financial ruin is just too overwhelming.

How come the media is only jumping up and down due to celebrity suicides?  I'm pretty sure the suicide rate has remained steady among 'regular' people.

Suicide rates have increased 35% in my state in the last 5 years.  It's so sad.

Suicide rates have increased across the country & yes...among all sectors.  I think I read a report at some point that the only state that has not had a significant increase is Nevada.

The ones left behind, never get their question of Why? answered.  It's very sad.

Sadly, I doubt the ‘answer’ will be satisfying.

Re: 'Will We Finally End the Silence Around Suicide?'

???    The "silence" around suicide?   Who thinks there's a "silence"?

Personally, I've had two people I knew well take that path and one thing I'm sure of .......  there are cries for help sometimes, but if a person REALLY wants to kill themselves, they will do it.    They will find a way.

While there need to be better treatment for those suffering with depression or mental illness, how do you help someone who is hiding their plight and those around them don't even have a clue as to what's on their mind?  How does that happen?  How do we help those people?

Unfortunately, I don't believe there is an answer to those questions.  You can't solve a problem if you aren't aware there is a problem.

I believe the mindset is not to 'kill' oneself, but to "escape or get rid of their pain" which could be temporary but doesn't feel like it at the time.

We will never know what they are escaping from because we can't feel their pain!

I'm not sure they always understand the why!

Re: 'Will We Finally End the Silence Around Suicide?'

We can help by trying to eliminate the stigma against seeking help and and labels that go with it. You only have to read some of the comments on this board to see that a social stigma is still very much in place.
We can help by demanding better coverage for behavioral health issues by insurance carriers. While there Has been an improvement in mental health coverage, most plans still severely limit coverage items such as therapy sessions or in-patient care. Drugs alone do not work! Every reputable study out there for years has shown that medication has to be combined with therapy for the best outcomes.
