Update from the OP. The Glass Doctor replaced it yesterday. He said that the shatter had seemed to come from the handle   the shatter was on the inside of the double pane. He brought the replacement yesterday and when he took the door apart he said a nail (not really a nail..but can't use the actual word starts with s) from the handle came in contact with the glass..probably wear and tear or recent power washing.

It was a hot day and possibly cold water from the hose triggered it. He was certain. He shortened the nail (!) and put plenty of caulk around.

The contac paper held the glass in place since July 4. We were lucky. Thanks for all your interest and replies.

Maybe a bird crashed into it.  Like the kind in Jurassic World.
