It should be designated a National Park and admission should be free.

I agree, Esmerelda. FTR I don't go to cemeteries either for that reason.

I think it's ghoulish to have them there and make it public that they are there. They are human remains for pete's sake. Anyone who hasn't had their loved one(s) identified can assume they are the remains of their loved one(s). How would you (anyone) feel in their place?
It's wrong...IMO.
ETA...If they've been held at the NY ME's office until now, what's the point of moving them? If they're still trying to make a determination, wouldn't it facilitate the work to have them at the work site?
What is the difference between that and a cemetery? Or a mausoleum? The remains are categorized and are to be kept with the hope that as DNA identification advances over the years, they will be able to eventually identify those remains for certain. They are not still trying to make a determination. They have used every test and way they have available with today's technology and cannot identify them at this time. The hope is with advancing technology, some day they will.
From what I read, many family members wanted them there. Only some didn't want them down in the museum, they wanted them up top.
The admission fee...the fact of it, not the amount.
More from the cnn blog:
"Families who oppose the current placement of the unidentified remains have advocated for a separate memorial for their loved ones. They say the underground museum is prone to flooding, and have said the $24 entrance fee is inappropriate for a place akin to a cemetery."
So some wanted them there, some did not. And the decisionmakers sided with those who did because...? Wouldn't it be more accurate so say some families didn't object to having them there? I doubt any family said, "How about you put the remains of someone who might be a loved one of mine in the museum?" Much better not to have them there, not offend families who don't want them there.
If there was no museum, where would they be kept while waiting for more advances in technology? Why not keep them there anyway?

I agree about the admission fee. I think I read that family members will not be charged? Doesn't really make me feel differently about the admission fee, but at least if I heard correctly, the families won't have to pay.
At any rate, I don't have a loved one or family member whose remains might be in that container. But I did see an interview with a mother that lost her son that has not had remains identified and that is exactly where she wanted the remains. I doubt there are few things all of the family members agreed upon...however, I would be willing to bet they agreed on not leaving the remains basically unattended in a medical examiner's office for years possibly decades to come. Always the possibility of the remains being lost, accidentally discarded, forgotten, etc. as time moves on.

Why is the commenting period closed????
Could it have something to do with the substance of the thread maybe? If it was the one that something to do with an guy drafted in the NFL? That is where politics and ones ideologies many times come into question, and heavens knows that can explode BIG time on here.

National Parks aren't free.

Does anyone know what the source of the funding for this museum was? The high admission cost will exclude many visitors.

National Parks are far from free, some have a hefty admission fee.

Cost to visit the Museum of Natural History Adults $22
Cost to visit the Metropolitan Museum of Art Adults $25
Cost to visit the Hayden Planetarium Adults $22
The cost to see the 9-11 Museum is in line with the cost to see various other museums in NYC.
