Why has everything become so expensive?

I realize that our income's have not kept pace with the cost of living, and I do believe that is a big part of the problem. But how disappointing and somewhat depressing it is to know that you've spent hundreds of dollars and now have to spend the whole year catching up and not able to do anything except go to work and pay it all off.

I have only 6 or 7 people to buy for and I buy practical gifts, not crazy fads, or even expensive items. I look for sales, I don't shop fancy department stores, and I don't have a lot of extra money to spend so I just get over whelmed with how expensive everything is these days.
