Why do store employees ask this dumb question if they can't do anything about it anyway?

Today I went to Michael's looking for red and white 10 inch taper candles. I needed 6 red and 4 white. THey had a box with 3 red ones on the shelf. No back up box to be seen and the place where the white ones would be on the shelf was completely empty. Feeling rather disgrunteled I went to check out and the chirpy young thing at the register says cheerily "Did you find everything you were looking for today?" I tell her No. You are completely out of the white candles I wanted and only had half the red ones. She just stand there and looks at me like I am from another planet.

If they can't do anything about it then why do they even bother to ask??? What is the purpose behind this question anyway???
