Why do people say "Happy Memorial Day " ?

The real meaning has gotten lost with heading to the Beach and the start of summer. Everyone seems to forget those that died

I don't think that people do it deliberately.

There are times when you must speak, not because you are going to change the opposing side, but because if you do not speak, they have changed you.

This morning, the wife of a fallen solider said that for someone to wish her a Happy Memorial Day would be the equivalent of telling someone to Have a Nice Time as they left to attend a loved one's funeral.

Great question. I think it's very inappropriate especially if it's said to someone has lost a loved one in the military.

If we stay with the real meaning, are we supposed to draw the curtains and mourn all day?

Maybe because so many are happy that their loved ones made it home. Doesn't mean that we don't respect those who gave their all. It is a somber day for many, but we can respect that. We celebrate the freedoms that they fought for and continue to fight for. We respect those that are gone and those that remain to continue that fight. For some, it is the beginning of summer because they haven't understood the ravages of war in a very personal way.

Fate whispers to her, "You cannot withstand the storm." She whispers back, "I am the storm."

Many people don't even know the purpose of Memorial Day. It isn't for those who have served; that is Veteran's Day. It isn't for those who are serving. It is to honor those who DIED serving.

Maybe some people are celebrating it because they DIDN'T lose their life in wartime conflict. It's a "half-empty, half-full" view on life.

The meaning of This Day gets lost a little more with each passing year. A lot of people say "what does WWII" mean? Some, depending on age don't have a clue about Korea or Vietnam. I flunked History 4 times but I did take time during my time in the US Army to learn and understand what was done for my freedom and what I may need to do to keep it during my time in said Service.

I don't think anyone means anything negative with what they say and it is just "a figure of speech". Have never and will never want anything to do with those that are too PC to suit me and my vocabulary.
