Re: Why do people load up on perishable food before storms?

Because they don't want to run out of food at home because the roads aren't passable so they can't go to the store.  I'm not sure why this is even a question. Not everyone loses power and even if you do, it's cold outside so food stays good just fine in the garage. We have many ways to cook without power including our gas stove.

Loading up before a storm is senseless if you are loading up on foods which need refrigeration, and you do not have a generator which supports your household needs, so you can switch it on, if the power fails.

Pray everyone stays safe with the upcoming storm approaching this weekend, in the North East and elsewhere too.

LOL you're joking right? It's a snow storm that is prompting this thread, my garage is just as cold as my fridge during a snow storm.

Re: Why do people load up on perishable food before storms?

I was in Victoria BC when the worst snow storm hit the city. They didn't have enough equipment to clear the roads and the only highway out was shutdown. We were in a hotel and enjoyed walking about but during those walks we saw people out walking too and they were looking for somewhere to buy food.People with babies and small children who said they couldn't find anything open to get milk or bread. It became a little scary to watch so many people out looking and it was then I decided if any mention of a storm to be prepared.

That was my thought too reading this thread Jaxs Mom.  I no longer live in snow country, but I was raised in the Midwest.  If it's winter, refrigeration would be least of my worries.   It's COLD outside folks.  Probably colder than your fridge.

Put a cooler in the snow or as Jaxs said, in your unheated garage.  Your food will be just fine.  Fretting about a fridge going out seems just silly to me.

Re: Why do people load up on perishable food before storms?

When I was young and we lived on post in old housing we often kept stuff in coolers outside in the winter during bad winter storms. Our house looked "fancy" but the 1960's HVAC wasn't up to par. Add power outages to that and it was a big problem.

As I posted on another thread people do what they have to do.

I used to live on a farm, on a backroad. We were snowed in for a week in the blizzard of 93. You learn to improvise, because the backroads were not main priority, and if you didn't get what you needed beforehand, you were SOL.

Yes, This is the reason !   Storms will move out and away, but it is the aftermath.  It is not just about temporarily losing power.  There are blocked roads due to ice and snow and snow emergency routes where only emergncy vehicles are permitted, difficulty walking on ice and snow, difficulty driving, stores closed, carrying grocery bags from store to car to house at the same time walking up and down slippery snow mountains to get by , etc, etc, etc...... The remains of a large snow storm in January can still be evident on the ground until end March/early April.   I guess you have to live in a true winter climate to fully understand.

Re: Why do people load up on perishable food before storms?

l live in the midwest, we sometimes get extreme amounts of snow/ice, enough so that clearing the roads/streets is problematic for the road crews, sometimes it is a few days before all are clear enough to safely travel. Also at times have power outages. I stock up on enough for a week's supply ahead of a major predicted storm. I do not have a backup generator, but as others have said, coolers set out in the snow or in the garage work fine. It is more of a problem as to at what point will the stores get re-stocked as ALL stores supplies will be impacted and the restocking may also take a few days once roads are opened up again. If we are only getting a couple inches, not a big deal around here, unlike the D.C. area, apparently. I think we all have lived enough years in our own areas to know if and when we need to over-stock our cupboards and refrigerators/freezers. The audacity of some to be condescending towards what other feel they need to do, on these boards, never fails to crack me up.

Re: Why do people load up on perishable food before storms?

Why do people assume that the people buying perishables do not have access to a Generator? Also I can light my gas stove if the power goes out and put my cold items in a cooler on my deck.

What I find curious is that there are alwaya people at the store complaining about people being at the store.
