I know there's no guarantee, but the odds are better in my favor if I get it. After nearly killing myself in two different faints the last time I had the flu, I like better odds.
I am with you millie...I have had 2 terrible experiences...last one was the worst.

I don't mean to laugh, but I will.
I finally convinced my dad to stop getting the flu shot. He would wind up sick for almost 10 days afterwards. Every year, the same thing would happen to him. So far for the past two years, he's been fine.
He's a diabetic, and he has a hard time controlling his sugars after that shot. They would either be too high or too low.

You are SO gonna get in trouble.

Most healthy adults may be able to infect other people beginning 1 day before symptoms develop and up to 5 to 7 days after becoming sick. Children may pass the virus for longer than 7 days. Symptoms start 1 to 4 days after the virus enters the body. That means that you may be able to pass on the flu to someone else before you know you are sick, as well as while you are sick. Some people can be infected with the flu virus but have no symptoms. During this time, those persons may still spread the virus to others.
My understanding is that there is a waiting time from when you get the flu shot until it becomes effective (if it does become effective).
So, do you stay away from people during that timeframe too?
After all, you don't know if you might have the flu already.
With all due respect, that's just splitting hairs. So you might be infectious at some point for a few days as compared to anytime within 5 or 6 months? But it's certainly your choice.
I don't really understand your timeframe.
I mean, the few days before symptoms show up would be there regardless. And I'd stay home if I had symptoms.
What's with the 5 or 6 months?
If you could be infectious at a point between getting the flu shot and it becoming "protective" - that's a very short time span. But because the flu season usually lasts about 5-6 months, at any point during that time you could have contracted the flu and not know it yet, but be infectious. Therefore, you could be considered "risky" at any time during that 5-6 month time frame. Just my logic - others may or may not agree with it.

I'm really happy to report that my last episode with the flu was that year my flu nearly killed me. Actually, I probably shouldn't say it was the flu - it was actually the steps, but I fainted walking from my bathroom back to my bed and landed with my head hanging free over the top step. Beyond terrifying.
Also, never had a flu shot reaction beyond a sore circle. Not even that now that the doctor shots me himself instead of having support staff do it!

Will I catch h&ll for saying that?
I don't know if it is or isn't.
I recall reading that last week but the OP denied it.
I have no idea, but I have realized that I've missed seeing Scottie posting. She and I have "agreed to disagree" on a number of things, but I enjoy posting with her, and I haven't seen her lately. Maybe I'm just on the wrong threads...?
FYI: O/P is NOT scottie...no way...no how...just thought I would way in.
Hi croemer, I have no idea who is who on these boards other than when someone voices their "suspicion" that this person may have been that person, etc. But I do enjoy posting with Scottie, and I've hardly seen her at all lately. I hope nothing is wrong.

Okay jubilant, I see your point. I've called out people for this same reason. I still think I was more or less right, but I could and should have worded it differently.
I understand. I have done it a time or two myself. I am just a little frustrated these days....when I get ready to post something and see people are already angry. I had a question about elderly people who are feeble (and not all that well) getting the shot. I just think we could all try a little harder...myself included. I am only too aware that when I point a finger at someone else I have 3 pointing back at myself

But it's still only *possible* that you're infectious for a few days before symptoms show.

Getting a flu shot is no guarantee against getting the flu so any one of us could be contagious at any given time, shot or no shot. Therefore I will take my chances without the extra carcinogenic chemicals in my body.

I work with a woman who gets these nasty upper respiratory infections EVERY Winter and she insists that the ONLY time she is infectious is BEFORE her symptoms show.
Then, when her symptoms DO arrive, she feels no need to stay away from others while she's hacking and coughing and sneezing all over the office.
We call her "Dr. B" around here.
