"Sit There" before they describe what someone did?

Example:  Don't "sit there" and lie.  or She "sat there" and laughed.

Not everyone is in the seated position when they do something and if they are it has nothing to do with the remark or situation.

This saying drives me crazy Cat Surprised

Can you give a more complete example, @Jackhound Mom?  I have never noticed that phrase being out of place - whether used grammatically or ungrammatically.

It is not clear from the examples you gave that the people weren't actually sitting.

Re: Why Do People On Talk Shows Say...

It's meant to indicate the location of the offending person when it happened. Sometimes it's indicated by the phrase, she laughed in my face. That the person was right in front of the speaker lends validity since it was observed and somehow makes the action more offensive.

Maybe for the same reason law enforcement refers to a suspect as "gentleman"?

Sorry to go a bit O/T, but that one...that one really bothers me!

It never ceases to amaze me what bothers some people. What bothers me is that people think you have to graduate from college to be able to speak correctly. I think people should be able to speak correctly before they go to college.

It's that little ole thing called innocent until proven guilty.

An arrest is not proof of guilt. Far from it.

How does one identify a gentleman?  Why not just "man"?

The same reason audiences are addressed as ladies and gentlemen rather than women and men.

I haven't heard the phrase.  I would say "she sat there" only if she was actually sitting there.
