Re: Who is still working during this?

@santorini  yes we will and also we will never forget either what is going on. I love our country and we have wonderful helping people. Just we got to understand things are changing now but we will get back. Hope we all learn from this. We are closing everything  to contain it all & not spread think we are doing a great job. Wish foreign countries had more sanitary control like we have, seems their lack of control caused this.

I agree.  The other day my friends neighbor was found dead with a self inflicted gun shot wound.

My husband is an appliance salesman.  He has to work, so says his boss.  They are busy.  I'm terrified he will bring something home to us.  His boss has threatened termination for not showing up.

Re: Who is still working during this?

I am retired.  DD works at a law office and is working from home.  We are in PA and the Gov. closed all non-life sustaining businesses.

My son is still working.  He works for a cable company and he has to go into people's houses.  He said they are to call the people first and see if anyone is sick.

He laughed and said "yeah, like people won't lie."  But at least he has a job.  I spoke to him yesterday, and although he lives near me, he is staying away from my house because he is in and out of strange houses every day. I will be 70 and have a couple health issues.

I am a speech/language pathologist that works in the school system.  My school district closed on Monday until 3/27 but I am assuming we will be closed longer than that.  I am a contractor so if I don't work I don't get paid; however, my contracting company did pay me for this past week.  I don't know if they will do this for the duration.

DH and I are self employed....we work with business and industry...we are dependent on the economy for our ability to stay afloat.  We did make it thru the downturn in the 80's, so only time will tell if we can survive.  We carry no debt so that is a plus for us.

I hope everyone can hang on...we will survive this downturn.

@Shorty2U, I know nothing about labor laws, but that doesn't seem right that they aren't paying your husband for his vacations. Its sorry alright, but it doesn't seem legal to me. Could you call the attorney general, or labor board and check and see if this is legal or not?

I'm very sorry, there are so many in this situation, and honestly, it could be any of us.

Who would have thought anything like all this would have happened to begin with? I didn't have a clue what we were gonna be dealing with. I still can't believe it.

Thank you for the info. His employers excuse was they had 1 night to shut down the plant of over 8,000 employees by order of the Governor. Maybe? They will change their mind. I agree he should get his vacation (which he was going to start in May! until this happened) I also agree, never thought in a million years something like this virus would happen!

It says a lot about his employer, and if your dh doesn't end up getting paid, I'd take to social media and let the world know how this business treated a faithful, 30 year employee.

The owners of the business are being very greedy, trying to keep as much as they can. They shouldn't get away with it.

In times like these, I reckon true colors come out. And some ppl are just plain old ugly.

I'm very sorry this has happened to your dh. Makes me so mad.

Re: Who is still working during this?

I am working from home. I usually work 3 days a week from home anyway. I work in software development, so I expect to continue to be busy no matter how long this lasts and I am thankful that I have a career where this is possible.

I am very concerned about the small retail businesses and restaurants. My hair salon had to close after midnight last night. I am going to try and order take out once a week to help provide some support to local restaurants.

Re: Who is still working during this?

I work in retail. I have two jobs. One store closed immediately (3/17) and notified everyone. We were told that if we were 'on the schedule' to work until 3/31 then we'd get paid for that time, but not beyond if they remain closed.  I was not on the schedule since I'm a PT fill-in, so no pay for me from that job.

My other retail job is still going strong. In fact, we're all getting more hours than usual. Some feel that it's because the main distritution warehouse wants to empty and close and is sending all the merchandise to the store for quick sales. I'm in Receiving, so that means we're busy.

BUT, no one knows how long it will last as so many other retailers are closing. I'm new at this place, so I'm told it's always one of the last to close for any reason. I'm in Florida, and was told my store didn't even shut down until one day before Hurricane Dorian hit. We're one of two stores open in the particular shopping plaza we're in. Barnes & Noble is the other one open for now.  ALL the stores surrounding us closed down, so we are busy with shoppers.  It's a clothing store, so why people are shopping and risking their lives is beyond me.

All ages of shoppers - mom's with kids and seniors - which really surprised me. In fact, they are many seniors just walking around checking which stores are open and such. One senior man even complained the Starbucks in the plaza won't let him sit in the store and eat!

My store - and this is sad to say - is NOT doing anything extra in the way of cleaning and/or disinfecting ANYTHING (carts, register areas, etc).  I bring in my own wipes and clean my own work station and everything I have to touch there. I have offered wipes to my younger co-workers, but they aren't interested.  They think I'm nuts - well so be it.  We are even standing right next to one another processing garments and no one but me seems to care.

I kind of wish this store would close already. I feel it's unsafe at this time. I plan to try to get hired on at a grocery store or go on unemployment. I live in a tourist type town, so many are trying to get those grocery jobs now, and with me being an older worker, I'm afraid I won't even get considered.  I'll be 60 later this year, but always feel passed over for younger workers in my area.

Sorry this is so long, but thanks for this thread and the opportunity to share my experience. I'm pretty stressed about all this and down to my last two rolls of toilet paper. I spend my spare time trying to find some, but in my area by the time I get off work, others have snatched it all up and I've not been able to get any for over a week now.  I wish people would stop hording it. There is no reason.

Be safe and Be Careful everyone!
