Re: Who Can Still Remember..........

Don't remember my "Yorktown" number from before age 7.  But age 7 - 14 I do remember my "Empire" number and that of my best friend.  And after that, my last childhood home "Baldwin" phone number and also my boyfriend's.

Re: Who Can Still Remember..........

This thread brings up so many memories for me...wow.  I got a turtle. I also got the clear, plastic pond thing it came with and there was even a plastic palm tree stuck in there for shade for the turtle.

I was so excited to get home with it. I filled it up with water and was so proud of my first pet.  Then my brother decided the turtle needed sun and put the whole contraption out on our back deck.  Within a few minutes, Mr Turtle was picked up by a bird and was never seen again.

I cried for days.  Then we moved onto gold fish from that same 5 and Dime!  We each got our own - along with some that little man in the diving suit to put into our fish bowls for decoration and our own little containers of fish food.  Mine even had pretty colored tiny rocks on the bottom of the fish bowl.

I remember the day we 'buried' my brothers fish by flushing it down the toilet when he went onto gold fish heaven.

Re: Who Can Still Remember..........

I remember all of that.

Our family phone was a black wall phone and in high school I got a blue princess phone in the bedroom but we had party extensions.

Woolworths had a soda fountain. I always bought the pancake makeup in a stick and light pink lipstick that looked white when you wore it. Also the mood lipsticks.

Fun times!

Does anyone remember when you could go in the 5 and 10 and buy those little baby turtles and they put them in a carton for you to take home?

They had birds and fish also.

After those I had to run to the Barbie aisle to see if any new clothes came in.

hi, @Mersha   yes my sister and i had a number of those baby turtles. one of them died and we held a funeral for him. he was given a proper burial. we used a glass pickle jar for the casket.   the last two ran away when we cleaned out their washtub "home" out in the backyard. we looked high and low for them. i imagine they escaped to the swamp behind our neighborhood.   i guess they were banned from sales in 1975 die to salmonella. some children got sick.

That was so nice of you and your sisters to provide a casket and everything for the funeral. Proper burial and all :-)     What was his name?

As a sophomore in high school, my first part time job was as a cashier at the local Woolworth's 5 & 10 !!!  Good picture there !

I thought I died and went to heaven:  assigned the candy counter !   Almost got sick from sampling too much....but it cured the sweet tooth !

@jlkz   You were soooooo lucky to be a cashier at  Woolworth's and get to use that wonderful, amazing, fascinating cash register. Smiley Happy

I would watch in awe when something was rung up and wanted to push those buttons so badly.

I still have a thing for vintage registers!

Retired Legal Secretary - I too have photos of both my sister and I with our Toni Home Perms.  It wasn't our Mom who was the "stylist" but an Aunt who would visit us from Connecticut and conveniently had 2 perms in her suitcase.  Always dreaded the look, and the short straight bangs that she would cut first and perm the rest.  We looked horrible.
