In NYC grocery stores can donate food to City Harvest which then redistributes it to soup kitchens and shelters. Hotel kitchens, corporate cafeterias and other businesses also participate. There are, of course, requirements about what can and can not be donated (such as nothing from an open buffet). And no home baked, homemade or home canned goods.
But most things from a certified kitchen are accepted.
