Which is more awkward.....

To receive clothing as a gift that is too small or too big? My MIL gave my SIL a gift that was two sizes to small. When she asked if it would fit my SIL told her she needed a bigger size, my MIL kept insisting it would fit. My SIL was embarrassed because ( in front of everyone) she kept having to say she is " bigger than she looks". My MIL gave me a sweater way too big( I wear a large or xl and she gave me a 1x) I felt bad that she thinks I look bigger than I am. Would either of these situations embarrassed you and if so, which would be worse?
