Where do you think confidence really comes from?

This is a subject I speculate about. So, I'm wondering what you all think.

For me, never having had much confidence my whole life, I am always amazed by the amount that some people have. In some people I can sort of understand it and in others, not so much.

Where do you think all this confidence really stems from?

My theory is that a great source of it begins early in childhood. I am not going to blame anyone really but I was never really encouraged as a young child in any endeavors at all or really praised and told how wonderful I was or beautiful or smart or that I could be anything I wanted --- things of this nature.

I hear people talking and telling their children how pretty they are and smart and how great they do this or that and some day they can be the president if they want, etc., etc. Which, in my opinion, is how it should be. However, sometimes parents can over-do it and give children big-heads or over-inflated egos. I think though when your parents believe in you and let you know, this leads to confidence and a feeling of self-worth.

I do not, of course, believe this is the total answer and that millions of people go on to great success without any real praise or help from family, etc.

I know people who have an over abundance of confidence, such that it is not attractive at all and they are not pleasant to be around.

Just wondering what your take is on this.
