I already had some N95 face masks from a while ago before this coronavirus started. I was going to use them when cleaning my bathroom because the fumes from anything I use is just too much for me. I used one today when grocery shopping at Giant. Can't say I liked it at all but I guess any protection is better than nothing. I've also ordered face masks off of eBay and am still waiting for them to arrive. I really feel sad about all of this especially after seeing a sign on one of the condo doors here at my hi-rise on my floor that says the couple is in self quarantine and no visitors are allowed and please use the phone.

I had two almost full boxes of masks that I bought over the last 5 years. I was supposed to mail a bunch to my brother in CA since he can’t get any but of course I forgot them when I went to the post office today.
I also had material that I had bought for projects I never got around to making so I tried sewing a mask with a filter pocket. I used bias tape that I cut in half and sewed for ties. For a filter I had scraps of t-shirt material that I had ironed Pellon on. I figure that’s 4 layers of protection. I will make several more this week.

We purchased ours years ago at the hardware store. We were doing a home project that involved sanding. Still have a few left over from then.

Word of caution. Local news warned two websites showing local addresses were fake. Sites had been recently set up. Don't send money until checked out.

As to disposable gloves, I use the ones that come in a box of hair dye to use to shop in the grocery store. I have lots of boxes of hair dye at home because I frequently do root touchups but I don't use those cheap disposable gloves that come in the box of hair color because their dexterity for coloring hair isn't good. So I'm taking those gloves out of the boxes of hair dye that I have and putting them in a box downstairs so my husband or daughter can also use those to grocery shop. Otherwise I wear thin gloves that runners wear when I shop as I have several pairs and they are easy to wash.
I use vinyl disposable gloves to color my hair but I'm saving those gloves and using a pair of reuseable vinyl gloves that hairdressers use to color hair.

I bought 2 boxes, 50 each, 9 years ago, from eBay, when I first adopted my 2 kitties. I had never had pets, so when I learned about cleaning their box, I was afraid of breathing in the dust. I never used them, so they've been in a drawer this entire time. I remember them being dirt cheap at that time.

My husband had a few N95 masks left over from last year. He uses them when he cuts the grass because of allergies. We also ordered some from Amazon, back in February........
But I also sew, and I made about 20 lined masks last weekend for some family members.
There is a website called "craftpassion dot com" that has a free simple pattern for a very nicely fitted mask...if you know someone who sews.

About 8 days ago, I found a box of 50 at our local medical supply store. It’s where I go to buy medical equipment for my husband (walkers, wheelchair, etc). They had a limit of one box per customer. One customer tried to buy two boxes saying one was for his brother. They said to have the brother call and they would ship it to him. It might be worthwhile checking with your local medical supply stores to see if they have any and if they would ship it.

@Jordan2 wrote:I have seen most everyone wearing a mask. These are mostly the type of masks people in the medical field wear. I can't beg, borrow, or steal a mask, which begs the question, where are they getting them? Maybe they ordered long ago when we were told we didn't have to wear them. I had to buy cloth masks from Etsy, I'm still waiting for them.
I have no idea why but I had ordered a box of masks and a box of latex gloves prior to everyone having to stay home and before price gouging started. I also bought 2 cloth ones (fun colors) on etsy the other day in case I run out of the others before this is over.
