Backs against the proverbial wall?
In prison?
Among the missing?
Drug addicts?
Amoral and/or abusive?
Mentally ill?
Some situations I cannot state here for obvious reasons.

We may be under the illusion that living here in the good old USA, everyone really does have equal opportunities to achieve and live a sterling life.
In my opinion they do have equal opportunities, but all do not start in the same place. Not 1 person here got to pick their parents, nor where they were raised as a young child.
I grew up seeing nothing but poor people where I lived. None of us had a father in the house. How we moved through life started with the 1 parent we all had in the home. Some mothers decided to stay in the home and produce more children. Others, like my mother, chose to work instead making her and our lives harder.
For almost all the prior decades of my life I heard the word equality. Then some over educated moron decided that having equality wasn't enough. Thus came the ridiculous conceptual word equity. It followed the '70's-'80's concept of: Everyone gets a trophy nonsense.
And!! Here we are.

Not everyone is equipped to go after and attain success. It's become a whack a mole existence for some. Plug one hole...another spouts up.

@hckynutjohn When I used the word equality, it may have been misinterpreted as "opportunity." This is not what I meant. I have seen siblings in the same families, pretty much raised in the same way, but they were not equally equipped mentally or physically. Those who couldn't keep up in those spheres (even though helping hands and encouragement were frequently offered AND accepted), continued on a downward slope. It wasn't their fault and life is often cruel.

Myself and my 3 older sisters were raised only by my mother. We all had the same upbringing, and though each of us chose a different way of life! All of were instilled with certain values, none of which were about $$$.
All of us were successful with the lives we chose, even though our formal educational levels, differed immensely. We all were equipped differently mentally, and took very different roads to our successes, all because of what our mother instilled in us at a very young age.
The mainstay she ingrained in us was this. Never, ever depend on anyone else to take care if you. You and only you are in control of where you go through life, independence!
