Re: When your father is the BTK serial killer, forgiveness is not tidy

Something the article said, that his wife never slept in that house again after his arrest. The violation and displacement she must have felt...terrible thing.

I remember watching the Forensic Files or Dateline Mysteries about this. Turns out the psychopath killer was just a normal-looking, church-going man. When they interviewed him, he calmly told about all the cruel things he did to these people. Sicko.

Mellie, did you look at the story? There are pictures of him. Yes, pretty normal looking.

I didn't read the link. I remember watching it on one of those TV shows a couple years ago.

It really is a good article. Very in depth about his family.

I think this was the case where he would communicate with the police through a newspaper. He asked if a computer CD could be traced and they lied and told him no. So he sent them something, but they traced it to him.

I remember the case well. What a relief when they finally caught him! The question of forgiveness is an interesting one. She said she forgives him, but does she really? It didn't look like it in the last few paragraphs. I don't know if I could forgive someone who betrayed me so badly. I would wonder if anything in my life was real. Did he love me or use me as an alibi? The man destroyed so many lives, and not only the ones he killed.

Yes, it would make me feel like my whole life was a lie. I just can't imagine trying to pick up the pieces after.

Re: When your father is the BTK serial killer, forgiveness is not tidy

I grew up in Wichita, went to the same high school as Dennis Rader (although years later) and went to the same University around the same time he was there (if I recall the dates correctly). I had many friends in Park City. I believe he had a relative who later also attended Heights H.S. around the time I was there.

I remember that day 25 years later when he resurfaced. I had long since moved away and was traveling on business. I was in the hotel bathroom getting ready for the day and listening to CNN to catch the morning's news. His reappearance was announced, and I remember freezing, and the hair on my scalp and arms literally raising. I walked into the room with the TV and stood transfixed, transported back 25 years when his murders paralyzed the city and people were panicked.

At the time, people thought monsters were readily recognized. Just looking at his senior high school photo, there was nothing there to reveal the deeply troubled person below the surface. At that time, he was not the fully fledged murderer he would become, but the beginnings were there and taking shape.

I hope his family is never found and that they will be able to live the rest of their lives in peace and privacy.
