Re: When you were little......

I sat near a girl who was outwardly clean but was giving off some body odor.  I assumed it was hormones.  I remember telling my mom and my mom talked to the principal.

My mom was on first name basis with both principals that ran my grade school.  One thing I can say, Ma did it in a way sensitive to the girl - my mom didn't want her humiliated.

I think she was called down to the school nurse and it was handled discreetly.

Re: When you were little......

Mac Duff, since you asked.......

By the time I made it to the principal's office (nun) there were tears in my eye because I thought he broke my skinny arm.

It was welted nicely and on it's way to bruising.  She looked up at me and I said, I need you to call my mother.  I was just assaulted by Frank XXXXXX.

I said, either you call her or I go home and tell her what happened and tell her that you didn't want to call her.

Frank got paged to the front office, my mom showed up, I showed her my arm and she lost it and got in his face.  My mom was a typical Leo - small with the heart of a Lion.  I thought she was gonna deck him.

We came to an understanding that no one touches me - ever.

He got in trouble that year because girls complained about him looking up their skirts.  That year I graduated - next year they decided he would teach boys only and got fired for being too aggressive.

I realize this doesn't sound very mature for a 52 year old, but I didn't shed a tear when I read Miss Marcy's, Miss Dorothy's or Frank's obituaries when they died later in my life.

Ahh, my mother was a wonder to behold.  All that was missing was her superhero cape.  My father found it embarassing, but she was like a lion or a bear when it came to her children.

Re: When you were little......

I wasn't so "little" but I had just turned 16 and got my driver's license-I was driving around with two of my friends all of us crammed in the front seat. We saw our Coach and Driver's Ed instructor-I was honking and we were all waving when bam! I ran up on the curb-well a friendly police officer happened to be behind us and pulled me over ! My excited squeals of "hey look at me I'm driving" turned to sobs and OMG did Coach see all of this! Well the officer fussed at me and told me that he was going to be keeping a watch out for me and I needed to pay attention to the road. Yes my Coach saw the whole thing. He was just shaking his head. Living in a small town, the officer told my dad and I was grounded!

Re: When you were little......

[ Edited ]

In my school, all kids had to go to a 1 week camp up in the mountains in the 5th grade.  So the day arrived and though I didn't want to go I had no choice as the parental units hadn't opted out; with no escort I walked to the school alone and saw a row of yellow school buses and I had no idea which one to get on.  I wore eyeglasses at the time for nearsightedness but still could not see past 10 feet or so and I got on the wrong bus.

No one read a roster to see who was there or who was not supposed to be there and before I could speak up to someone that I didn't recognize anyone from my class or from my school for that matter (other schools went too and gathered/boarded there in front of my school) the driver drove away and it was too late.

So, the drive was over an hour and when we reached the mountains there were switchbacks.  I had never camped out and had never been to the mountains and oh, I had never been away from home by myself.  There were no seatbelts in those buses back then and we were all jostled and felt each and every bump.  I looked out the window and saw the drop and all I could think of was why was I there....no one asked me.

Me and four other girls were herded into a cabin and an older kid like a high school senior - not someone of real authority that might be interested in helping me - blurts out, who are you?  It was already dark and we were told that it was time to go to bed.  The cabin was not insulated and I was freezing plus could hear the sounds of the great outdoors which was very unfamiliar to me....didn't sleep much if at all.

Next morning we were told where the mess hall was for breakfast.  The trail was rugged with steep steps to walk down with no rails to hold onto and I fell.  Another older kid came over to me to see if I was okay and I burst into tears telling her I got on the wrong bus.  Too late now as my class was on the other side of the camp and no way to get me there.

When the week was over and we were herded back onto the bus, I was so happy plus had lost track of time and had no idea how many days had gone by and which day we were on when we got back on that bus.  I closed my eyes for the switchbacks this time and we were driving in the dark again.

My punishment for getting on the wrong bus was to write a report complete with illustrations of what I had learned and had seen...what did the trees and leaves look like and the terrain; oh and this after the announcement to the class that I got on the wrong bus.  But doing reports is what I excelled in and I of course received an A.  So that cross face scolding me turned into a big smile when she handed it back to me.

I don't think I smiled for a long time though.

Re: When you were little......

Embarrassment-by-proxy, with a twist...

Several lifetimes ago, a co-worker and I used to walk from our office building in downtown Detroit to Hudson's for lunch.  One day, my co-worker tripped over her own two feet -- and it was funny...she tripped, then stumbled forward and wobbled and groped for any (non-existent) thing to grab onto.  A couple of people behind us started laughing.  My co-worker slowly turned around, threw up her nose, and in her loudest, most indignant voice, yelled, "I bet you laugh at blind people, too," and limped all the way to Hudson's!
