From the hallway (living room was for company), I could see Mom's little treasures that were breakable atop the coffee table.

Never magazines.

Dad was a minimalist, so only a monster ashtray. Until he stopped smoking, then only a big bowl of nuts to crack.

Time, Newsweek, Progressive Farmer, Farm Journal, McCalls, Ladies Home Journal, New Yorker, Modern Photography, Better Homes and Gardens, Southern Living, the cat or the parakeet--at different times.

Magazines - the only one I really recall is Life. Oh, Better Homes and Gardens!

We had that same style nutcracker and bowl, although ours had 4 holes around the nutcracker, that held the nut picks.

Clutter and a rest place for our feet!  Our coffee table decor was short lived.

@SilleeMee   My mother had a cigarette box, with matching ash tray on the coffee table but she didn’t smoke. My father did but I don’t think there were any cigarettes inside.

  He had a wooden container for pipe tobacco but didn’t have a pipe. 

   At least there were no cigars!

    Doilies were everywhere. Mama and grandmama made them. I still have them.

I think I still have some of Mom's doilies, too. I'm not planning on placing them on anything in my house like she did...LOL! She even had them in the car!...on the head rests.

@RedTop  Ours had nut picks too, but my Mom removed them because we tried to impale each other with them.
