Re: When you're at home do you have background noise on (TV, Music, Sound Machine)

most of the time a tv is on OR satellite radio.

i definitely prefer a little noise to silence.

Re: When you're at home do you have background noise on (TV, Music, Sound Machine)

Always. I lived in the city before living here in the country. I hate quiet. IF Im up before noon I have HLN on in the background. From lunch on, I usually have music playing until my husband gets home. When he goes to (at 9-bed earlier than me), the tv is on in the background (like now). Also when in bed we have a humidifier on year round that makes noise.I cannot sleep without noise. (I am thinking about getting a sound machine for the bedroom when we get a new humidifier because the new humidifiers don't make noise).

TV or cd's in the living room most of the time. NPR on in the kitchen & car. BBC news on clock radio at midnight.

Used to long for quiet when there were 5 of us. Be careful what you wish for. When the grands are here, it's happy bedlam.

I usually prefer silence. But since I live in a horrendously noisy (at all hours) densely populated urban environment, I *need* to use white noise machines, fans, a/c or the TV in various combinations in order to (1) not stress out even more than I already am, (2) get any sleep, (3) not kill people.

In a year, when I retire and move to the country, I will enjoy utter silence except for birds and frogs.

.....15 years ago, I was exactly where you are now.

It gets better! Congrat's on your retirement!

.....this morning, I'm listening to the birds and geese and enjoying the country living I had always dreamed of.

Heavenly!

I have the TV on during the day, but switch to classical music when I'm cooking.

Sounds weird, I know.

moonchilde, I understand exactly where you are coming from. When I lived in a major city for a short time, I couldn't get used to the noise, as I was raised on a quiet street in a small city.

Then, in my 30's I moved to the country.

Surrounded by woods and a pond right next to the house, I thought it would be heaven. Boy, did it take me a long time to get used to heaven! We have no air conditioning, so in the spring/summer, windows open at night. The frogs were so loud, it took me a couple of years before they didn't wake me at night. Same problem with the birds. They really crank up the volume just before dawn, and you get up whether you are ready or not. Add these things to the roosters crowing (and not just at dawn, but the goofy things can be at it all day) and the occasional birthing cow in the middle of the night, and you have a whole other bunch of noise pollution to get used to. Oh, and don't even ask about the horrible screeching and screaming coming from the woods at night sometimes. I've been told it is owls, but it truly sounds like the blood curdling battle cry of the soul of some tortured Native American warrior. If I'm out with the dog for his last potty break before bed, and I hear that, I still run like mad woman for the house!

That said, I'd never trade this noise for the other, but it did take some getting used to. After a few years, much of it is comforting, and very enjoyable to listen to. Just be forewarned, that it could be a bit of an adjustment at first, and enjoy the changes.

Re: When you're at home do you have background noise on (TV, Music, Sound Machine)

I like quiet. Even though I keep my TV on sometimes, it's always muted.

The only exception would be music. I like my music loud (not blasting) and I can't do that here. It's very frustrating.

Our new apartment has three exposures, ground floor and no one above us. It's almost like a separate little house connected only on one side. Hopefully I will be able to play more music there.
