Just watching the previews made me cry. I wanted to see it but just couldn't. Now, there's the new movie with another great looking Jesus. I don't think there's many people it doesn't make cry.
I don't know if this will make you feel any better, but when Biblical scholars saw the movie, they said it was gratuitously violent - over the top for theatrical reasons - not true to history.
Which Biblical scholars? Because the scholars I know said it was accurate. Let's not pretend it wasn't a horrible death.
I do think it was a great film, and I've seen it a few times. I also plan to see Son of God, the theatrical extension of The Bible miniseries.
The Bible is public domain, no rights to purchase, no releases to procure, so anyone can frame any story any way they want to ... but it's about time God was back on the big screen.

I completely agree with you ennui1, and I would also like to know which so-called "Biblical scholars" thought the movie was gratuitously violent? If anything, I think it was tame compared to what probably transpired. The Romans were cruel, they delighted in torture and sacrifice, and even the punishments rendered on their own troops i.e. Decimation and Fustuarium prove that they would show no mercy to any enemy of the Roman Empire. Not to mention that a sport of their primary entertainment was Gladiatorial Combat. People just don't like to face the facts of how cruel times were back then, and that it makes the sacrifice of Christ so much more powerful. Any attempt at reenacting that moment in history should make people cry. I watched The Bible miniseries and thought it was well done for the amount of time they had. Obviously they had many centuries to cover and had to hit the highlights. I look forward to seeing the film Son of God.

I do not watch animal stories as I usually end up embarrassing myself.
The biggest tear-jerker for me was the TV movie Brian's Song. The narrator's opening comment says it all.
"Ernest Hemingway once said "Every true story ends in death." Well, this is a true story."

Oh man, I don't need a movie. I cry every single day.

Sophie's Choice
I second that. I only watched it once and I'll never, ever, ever forget that scene.

It was violent to show what a horrible death it was. Not glossed over.
EXACTLY!!
Thank you, beammeupscottie & Ennui..
I ALMOST logged in last night after church but decided against it...
ETA- found, I was SOBBING so hard I left the theater and sat in the lobby until it was over ( told my B.F to stay and I would wait)....
A guy from concession brought me a drink and said " believe me, you are not the only one who had to walk out"... he was very kind...

I didn't dare go see it at the theater. We bought it though and I try to watch it Holy Week. It is always tough though.
