When it's time to let them go (cats)

Our cats live a long time. In March I posted that our oldest kitty Fooze had turned 20. At the time he was in excellent shape for his age. Since Friday he has taken a dramatic turn downward. He's not eating, and drinking only a little water. He can still climb up on things, but he's wobbly, and he has lost control of his bladder and bowel. The hard thing for me is he is still responsive to me. He meows, and wants to be around us. Two nights ago he slept all night in his usual spot between us. I didn't sleep all night. I was worried I'd roll over on him, and he kept trying to lie on my face. Last night, he slept curled up on a blanket on the couch.

It has been a horrible week for all of us. The kids are crying constantly, none of us feels like eating, and we just have no ambition to do anything but sit with him.

It's time to let him go. He has been to school for show and tell a number of times in his younger years. He has enjoyed jumping, climbing, and playing. He has put up with the kids dressing him up and putting him in the "birthday chair" every year. He has given us nothing but love and happiness. Everyone knows him.

All cats are special, and we've lost others. but he's truly one of a kind and we will miss him so.
