I think I probably notice the pride they take in their home. To me, that would mean a home that is clean, orderly and doesn't have a foul odor. I have been in peoples home who live a VERY modest life yet their home is lovely and warm because they take pride in it and show it in its best light.

Irshgrl, good answer and I agree.

Yes I agree.Smiley Happy

I'm a neat and clean freak. I notice whether or not a home is tidy and whether it appears clean.

I forgot about odors.

Me too lulu. If I walk into a dirty messy house I'm out of there as soon as possible. I have been around the block many times and have encountered homes like that, greasy water with dirty dishes in the sink, clutter all around. I have refused a cup of coffee at times because of that. It goes without saying that bad odors will be noticed as well.

Probably the first thing woulkd be the smell. Any smoke smell hits me right between the eyes and can trigger a migraine headache.

After entering a home and getting setteled, I notice the artwork and how it has been framed and hung. After 42 years as a framer I am usually mentally rehanging most of it. It is so common to see art hung too high on a wall, especially over a sofa. Pictures hung in a group are usually hung too far apart and the wall space between them becomes more important than the art.

I keep a hammer & hangers in my car, but most people wouldn't be open to my suggestions! LOL

Oh my, I wish you lived near me. I have so many museum mounted and framed works of art and need someone to help me place them. Several years ago I hired a woman for that purpose and she did the most fantastic group hanging I ever saw. I too notice how art is hung in a home and try to keep from looking at badly hung art, don't want the owner to notice me staring! LOL

Smells first, but at the very same time, cleanliness. Followed closely by light/dark. I cannot stand dark rooms, whether it is from paint colors, lack of windows or lighting. I like lots of light and brightness (not necessarily in colors, but in lighting and outside light coming in).

well I guess none of you should visit me -- I have two kitties -- who shed and I suppose the box has an odor -- don't notice myself. Also I am not a neat person and have a lot of clutter.

Dot try to pick up if I expect visitors -- especially cleaning lady -- but somehow it goes back to normal. also am elderly and have trouble picking up things I drop.

Sorry you can't come and be friends.

I first notice the smell. If I see some clutter, I'm immediately at ease. If its overwhelming clutter then I feel discomfort, like maybe I shouldn't be there because they are so busy.

I occasionally have some clutter, mainly mail. Some days I don't have the time to sort and toss.

I have a kitty litter box in my laundry room which is located right off the back door entrance of our home. I'm constantly cleaning the kitty litter sometimes twice a day. I found the plug in air fresheners such as Air Wick to work great. Just thought I'd pass that on to you..

Smell. If I smell smoke or mildew, I am out of there in New York minute. I just can't stand foul odors. Clutter makes me uncomfortable, but as Mr. Channing has cluttering tendencies, I have learned to look around that, but odor is an absolute deal breaker for me. Decorating is totally a personal thing, so I don't get offended by someone's taste, but sometimes I am highly amused!

Smoke gets into everything. I had an aunt who was a big smoker. It stained her walls, curtains, furniture, and windows. There was a yellow grime all over everything.

I had an Aunt like that, too. After she passed and we cleaned out her house, we even found yellow grime in her ice cube trays!!!

Re: When You Enter Someone's Home, What Do You Notice?

I guess decor is the first thing I notice. Odor defiantly. No judgement though. I love visiting a home that I am wowed by. I love visiting a home that is much more than I expected. I recently was in a co workers home. I did not expect to see what I saw. It was beyond beautiful. She is so normal. Her house is like a decor magazine lay out. I admit, I was envious. Her house is gorgeous. To me, that is fun
