@Mindy D Thanks for all the work you do to keep us informed.
I am thinking the GMO company will start offering restaurant owners free samples, either directly or through distributors. Can you imagine when a restaurant owner calls in her weekly salmon order and hears "wild caught salmon this week $6/lb, GMO $2.50/lb.?"
There should be no difference whether a person is buying salmon in a supermarket or a restaurant -- people want to know what they're eating. This has been a problem in the U.S. since the beginning of GMO foods.
I rarely order fish in restaurants because it's so easy to make at home.

@Mindy D Break it down for me. What's the bottom line?

@PickyPicky3 @Unfortunately, there's a law that was recently passed that delineates which type of businesses require labeling and which do not.

@Judaline @It's hard to do this because this is the first food of this kind for human consumption in the U.S. that has been released for sale. It could be safe, then maybe not. It could take years to see what impact this could have on human health and on the ecosystem. I should add that there is no current research showing that this fish is unsafe to eat. For me, I won't order it, if I know it's on the menu, for now. Humans have been cross breeding animals and plants for food for thousands of years but this process creates a brand new animal through the direct alteration of the DNA of Atlantic Salmon. I can't guess what the outcome will be.

Oh, good, we only eat Pacific wild caught.

@Mindy D I was just venting my frustration that ALL customers won't have their salmon source identified. I presume the bill was a compromise between people like me who are pro-ID and people who want to get the GMO salmon to market as quickly as possible.
What I'm not sure of is whether restaurant wholesalers are required to differentiate farmed GMO salmon from farmed non-GMO. That might present a major problem for restaurant owners who don't want to serve it.
Have you seen that info anywhere? Of course, I assume the GMO will look different. Or not?
