I would not want to win all of that money!
I think life could become a living nightmare with everyone after you with their hands out or either resentful that you won. Your home could become a prison at first until you escapted somewhere!
I would imagine that people would badger you so much it could become dangerous and who could you trust besides immediate family? You would need a bodyguard or several of them to protect your family!!
Even if you could get past all of that and decided to do all of the things you ever wanted to do then of course give some to the kids and other family members & friends (which of course can get extremely tricky), and keep enough so you never need to worry again about finances I would then want to donate the rest.....but where?...with who? Do you start your own foundation for a cause that's meaningful to you? I think that's what I would do but even that requires a lot of work and people to help you set it all up correctly.
No thanks! I would be much happier with a winning of around 5 million (after taxes of course).

TRUE STORY. We have a local single man that won The LOTTO years ago. To this day he is still single and living in the same trailer.
When we go to the local Flea Market, we see him shopping there. It was in the papers he received over $300,000 after they took out taxes yet he has NOT changed his way of living nor it appears married.
I speak to him when I see him but never mention winning the Lotto. I have NO idea if he donated the money or still has it invested. I would say he is one of the few that still have any of their Lotto winnings left.

I would be extremely generous. And then I would simply disappear.

it boggles my mind to think of having that much money. i imagine we would first pay everything off, travel and gift our families and friends. then there would be the charities. you may as well spend it because you can't take it with you!

Set up a trust for my only child. He will have to retire soon due to an injury he got on work. I am too old to think of bigger houses or fancier cars.
I had told my son if I had any money left when I go to give some to charity like animals, abused women and children, the blind and the smile train so I wouldn't have to wait to then.

Lots of interesting ideas here. I'm wondering if some of the contributors who posted earlier on in this thread have changed their minds in any way about what they would do with their winnings now that the payout is about a half a billion dollars after taxes?
Taking care of any financial issues seems like a given as a first priority, but with half a billion dollars, it actually seems unreasonable to just buy a sensible house and car and stay put. I'd be concerned about kidnapping, extortion, and the safety of my family. Also, that's a lot of money, and if you're going to stay in the same place and do nothing with your life, that's a total waste of that money and your life. To be given an opportunity like that and not take full advantage of its full potential is sad to me.
So, I would spend a huge chunk of that money on a home in an affluent, safe neighborhood far away from those who knew about my wealth and potentially do harm to me or my loved ones. After helping out my close family and friends, and donating to charities, I'd start a foundation. Then I would start buying or building homes and doing major renovations in my favorite cities across the world. i traveled in my early 20's, so I wouldn't need to tour the world, but I would want to have a place to hang my hat in some of my favorite cities. I would then immerse myself in the art and culture of the world, dine in amazing restaurants, have an amazing wardrobe, and enjoy lots of quality time with my family and friends. There's so much potential!

This morning there was an article in our local paper advising people what their first steps should be if they win a large lottery. It was very informative.
The very first thing they said is to avoid the urge to tell anyone (except spouse I assume).
In our state you have up to a year to claim the prize. The article stated to get all you ducks in a row as far as interviewing and securing financial advisers, managers, lawyers, even before you even notify the lottery board.

Buy a house in Hidden Hills and a house on the Gold Coast of Oahu. Buy a nice house for 2 sons and one for my sister. Give 3 million to animal rescue and 4 million to homeless shelters and 4 million to domestic violence shelters. The rest invest. I am not a car person and Inhave already traveled to most places I have wanted to see. Probably help sons out with projects they want to do for business and college for grandkids when they get older. But in all honesty I am happy with what we all are doing right now. Working hard and playing hard is okay. Not a bad life.

I would buy a private island in the tropics, fully self-sustainable, with all of the modern conveniences and move my family and loved ones there.

Sick to my stomach? LOL I think it tells on the back of the tickets. I've read it somewhere, but I can't remember how much for four.
It's got to be at least 500,000. I would be happy with that. Anyone know?
It's, 900,000,000 now. They better pick my #. LOL!!!
